The New York Islanders beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 on Friday night at UBS Arena, snapping their season-long six game winless drought.
"We know we have to put some wins together... and it starts with the first one, this is it," Head Coach Lane Lambert said. "It's nice to see our guys get rewarded. We got what we deserved, it was a victory and we played well."

Anders Lee and Brock Nelson (1G, 1A) scored for the Islanders, while Kyle Palmieri had a multi-point performance (2A) in the victory. Ilya Sorokin was perfect with a 23-save shutout in the victory, but the Islanders defense provided immense support in the feat.
It marked a much-needed win for the Islanders, as the group won for the first time since Jan. 14.
"You go through ups and downs and I think over the course of a season," Palmieri said. "It's never all good, and it's never all bad. We have one more game here before the break to feel good and to get on a little bit of a streak."

Sorokin lifts Islanders to 2-0 shutout win

SOROKIN EARNS FOURTH SHUTOUT OF THE SEASON:

Ilya Sorokin is going into the All-Star break on a high note.
Sorokin stopped all 23 shots he saw to earn his fourth shutout of the season and 14th of his career.
Unlike his three previous shutouts, which required 41, 46 and 49 saves respectively, Sorokin did not have to face a barrage on Friday night. The Islanders defensive effort suffocated Detroit's chances, limiting the Red Wings to 23 shots on goal, with only four shots credited as high danger chances at five-on-five, per Natural Stat Trick.
"Sorokin played great again and gave us a chance to win," Palmieri said following the victory. "We were able to give him some support and a little cushion."
Since entering the league in 2020-21, Sorokin's 14 shutouts lead the NHL.

KINGER'S CALLS
Lee Scores 18th
Nelson Scores 19th
After a scoreless first frame, Lee had the icebreaker, scoring early in the second period. Nelson took a shot from the dot to send the puck on net, which caught a diving Lee, who tipped it in past Magnus Hellberg from his knees.
The goal marked the captain's 400 career point, as well as his 18th on the season. Lee has four points (2G, 2A) over four games, with 34 points on the season (18G, 16A).
With a secondary assist on the opening goal, Nelson extended his point streak to five games, but his point production didn't end there. Nelson tacked on to his point total with a long wrister from the point in the third period, doubling the lead for New York.
The goal marks the first time in 11 games that the Islanders were able to score in the third period.
"We needed a good look, it was a great shot from Nelson," Lee said. "They haven't been going in the way we would have liked, especially in the third. For us to just push through, didn't matter where they were coming from, as long as we won the game."
Nelson put up four goals and recorded two assists over the span of his five-game point streak, remaining as the Islanders top goal scorer with 19 on the season.

PALMIERI IS HEALTHY AND HEATING UP FOR ISLES:

Since returning to the lineup, Kyle Palmieri hasn't missed a beat.
The 31-year-old forward has four points (4A) in his first three games back, after missing 27-of-28 with an upper-body injury. His primary assist tonight on Anders Lee's goal brought his point streak to three games, while he made it a multi-point game with an assist on Nelson's third period tally.
"[Palmieri] is hard on pucks, he's a thick body," Nelson said on what Palmieri brings to the line. "He has a great stick and a great shot, so give him a couple opportunities and he's going get a few of them."
Playing in 23 games this season, Palmieri has 13 points (6G, 7A).
"[I'm] happy to be back," Palmieri said after the win. "The last two games haven't been the results we wanted. But we went out there tonight... took care of business and we'll reset and try and do it again tomorrow."

NEXT GAME:

The Islanders will finish complete the back-to-back set as they'll host the Vegas Golden Knights at UBS Arena. Puck drop is at 7:30pm.
