The New York Islanders winning streak reached three games on Friday night, after scoring a 4-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes at UBS Arena.
Scott Mayfield (1G, 1A), Austin Czarnik and Brock Nelson (2G) scored for the Islanders, who beat/blanked the Coyotes for the second time this season. Ilya Sorokin made 17 saves for his fourth shutout this season and second against the Coyotes this year. Josh Bailey and Adam Pelech each had a pair of assists in the contest.
With the win, the Islanders (14-13-6) moved above NHL .500 for the first time since Nov. 11, 2021. The Islanders (34 points) also leapfrogged the New Jersey Devils (33 points) and Philadelphia Flyers (34 points) in the Metropolitan Division standings, moving up to sixth place.
As good an on-ice effort as the Islanders produced on Friday, it was overshadowed by the
tragic passing of Islanders legend and Hockey Hall of Fame member Clark Gillies

ISLES PUT ON CLINIC VS COYOTES:

The New York Islanders put on a clinic on Friday night, shutting out the NHL's second-lowest scoring team for a second time this season. Per Islanders radio's Greg Picker, it marked the first time the Islanders played an opponent multiple times in a single season without allowing a goal.
After a frisky few opening minutes for Arizona, the Islanders held the Coyotes to four total shots in the first period and 13 total shots through 40 minutes. This wasn't a quantity for quality trade either, as Arizona was only credited with three high danger chances at five-on-five through 40 minutes of play, including one on nine second period shots.

In that time, the Islanders built up a 2-0 lead, with Mayfield figuring in on both goals, a half-clapper to open the scoring and a backdoor pass to build a two-goal advantage.
In the third period, the Islanders put on the squeeze, opening up an 12-0 shot advantage that included Nelson's 3-0 wrister past Scott Wedgewood (31 saves) at 1:22.
Arizona finally got a shot on goal at the 7:18 mark of the third period, but by then it was too late. Nelson scored his second of the night at 9:59 - sliding into the net alongside the puck on a goal that was briefly reviewed, but ultimately stood. The Islanders held Arizona to four third period shots.
It was the type of frustrating and opportunistic game that characterized the Islanders success in the Barry Trotz era, played to a tee. With six more games - all at UBS Arena - until the NHL All-Star break, the Islanders - who are now 8-2-1 in their last 11 games - are hoping it can be a springboard.
"That's what we want to do, everyone knows the style of hockey we play. It's a good sign when that's happening and We've been able to put it together here for a little bit. Things seem like they're coming together better. We want to be stingy in our end and push the pace going forward."

MAYFIELD MAKES MOST OF MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT:

Military Appreciation Night means a little extra to Scott Mayfield, so it was fitting that the Islanders defenseman had some jump with service members in the crowd.
Mayfield had two points in the first period, opening the scoring with a half-slapper through an Anders Lee screen at 13:51. He also set up Austin Czarnik's goal to make it 2-0, faking another clapper before finding Czarnik with a backdoor feed.
Mayfield now has two goals and seven assists on the season, his nine points are third on the Islanders blue line.
Prior to Friday's game, Mayfield's brother, Air Force Captain Patrick Mayfield gave the defenseman a shoutout on jumbotron, filming the message in front of an F-16 at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico.
The Mayfield brothers ultimately bookended the contest, as Scott Mayfield was named the game's first star.

CZARNIK PLAYS WITH LEE AND BARZAL, SCORES SECOND OF SEASON:

The Islanders rotated the right winger on Mathew Barzal's line of late, looking for an offensive connection with the Islanders leading scorer and captain Anders Lee.
After playing Kieffer Bellows in the spot on Monday and Zach Parise on Tuesday, Austin Czarnik got his chance on Friday night and made the most of it.
Czarnik scored his second goal of the season, going to the net and deflecting a slap pass from Mayfield that nicked Lee on the way.
Czarnik's inclusion into the lineup marked the forward's first game since Jan. 13. He has five points (2G, 3A) in 10 games with the Islanders this season.

NEXT GAME:

The Islanders are back in action on Saturday night when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
