It's a balancing act.
In the pre-season, establishing good habits and team concepts are of the utmost importance.
But so, too, is the individual evaluation of players on the cusp, and others looking to make a good first impression.
And so the Flames group on this side of the pond, who are coming off a 7-4 loss on Monday to the Oilers, will be making a few changes to the roster for tonight's matchup against the Vancouver Canucks (the second of two split-squad games today, with the Flames veteran group falling 3-1 to the Bruins in Beijing this morning), welcoming a number of new players into the fold for their first games in a Calgary sweater.

Forwards Dmitry Zavgorodniy, Glenn Gawdin, Yasin Ehliz, Adam Ruzicka, and Gilbert Brule (PTO), along with defencemen Philip Samuelsson (PTO) and Adam Ollas Mattsson will be making their pre-season debuts.
Others, meanwhile, have earned another look on the heels of exceptional performance.
Dillon Dube, who had a hat-trick in Monday's defeat, will play in his fourth straight game tonight, and will be joined by Andrew Mangiapane and Buddy Robinson on the newly-formed top line.
Dube was unusually hard on himself following Monday's Battle of Alberta, saying that while the hat-trick was "nice" and a good boost for his offensive confidence at this level, his 200-ft. game is still a work in progress.
"For me, it's about staying involved for the full 60 minutes, where in junior you can kind of wander a little bit," Dube said following Wednesday's morning skate at the Scotiabank Saddledome. "You have to be dialled in at all times and I don't think I was.
"My performance can be better."
Upon hearing that via the media, coach Cail MacLean was over-the-moon pleased with Dube's comments, agreeing that a young player identifying his own areas of improvement - especially on the defensive side of the puck - is a positive sign for his development.
"That's our ideal [as a coaching staff], is working with players that are working to improve," MacLean said. "For Dillon, who had a great offensive night, to have the maturity a couple days later to say, 'Hey, there's a lot of other things I still need to work on' ...
"He never gets too high and never gets too low.
"We're excited to see what he can do tonight."
In goal, David Rittich will get the start and could go the full distance "if the situation arises," according to MacLean, but Tyler Parsons is expected to see some action at some point during the game.
"We know what the challenge is tonight," said Spencer Foo, who will play on a line with Glenn Gawdin and 2018 seventh-round surprise Dmitry Zavgorodniy in tonight's game. "It was nice to get our legs under us a little bit last game, but we want to get the win tonight.
"This is a great opportunity for a lot of us young guys and we want to show that we can be better. I think we're all really excited about this one."
The puck drops at 8 p.m. MT on Sportsnet.
Following tonight's game, the Flames will get the day off Thursday before continuing the pre-season on Friday against the Winnipeg Jets.
