It was a milestone night for rookie goaltender Owen Say on Dec. 9, one he won’t soon forget.

The 24-year-old turned aside all 44 shots he faced to secure his first professional shutout, guiding the Wranglers to a 3-0 win over the rival Coachella Valley Firebirds at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

“Words can’t describe that,” he said after the game. “With that volume of shots, you kind of get into a flow state. Things just came naturally to me tonight.”

But the story of his first shutout didn’t end with the final horn.

A player from Coachella Valley flipped the game puck into the stands, nearly costing Say the keepsake from his milestone.

Fan Tim Smith recognized the significance of the moment and returned the puck to the team so Say could have it.

Two days later, on Dec. 11, Say made sure that act of kindness didn’t go unnoticed. He met the fan personally and gifted him a signed jersey as a thank-you, a gesture that reflected both gratitude and the grounded character he’s already becoming known for.

Say’s opportunity has grown in recent weeks as the Wranglers navigate the absence of Ivan Prosvetov, who has been out week-to-week since suffering an injury against the Abbotsford Canucks on Dec. 2.

With the crease opening up, the London, Ont. product has stepped forward with poise.

Head Coach Brett Sutter praised the rookie’s composure and growth.

“He played spectacular," Sutter said. "He’s been close a few times this year and couldn’t quite get it, so it’s good for the kid to have a special nigh."
