Recap: Ducks Earn a Point, but Fall 4-3 in Overtime to Jets

The game was on the blade of Cam Fowler's stick as he made a move on Connor Hellebuyck in the early stages of overtime. A quick deke to the backhand had the Jets goaltender beat, but Fowler's shot caught just enough of Hellebuyck's pad to keep it from crossing the stripe. It was that close - inches, even - to jubilation. Instead, heartbreak followed when Bryan Little scored the winning goal with just 10 seconds left in overtime. The result was a 4-3 OT loss for the Ducks, who saw their winless skid reach 11 consecutive games (0-7-4).

Brian Gibbons and Rickard Rakell gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead to open the game, but they allowed the Jets to creep back in with two unanswered goals from Blake Wheeler and Patrik Laine. Andrew Cogliano scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period, and the Ducks held the lead until Ben Chiarot tied it with under six minutes remaining in regulation.

John Gibson finished with 30 saves, including six in overtime. Hellebuyck earned the win with a 28-save performance, improving Winnipeg's record to 29-14-2.

It could be argued the Ducks deserved a better fate in this game, considering their play as a whole, but the fact is they let another multi-goal lead slip away. (They led 3-0 on Friday vs. Pittsburgh and lost, 7-4.). Nevertheless, Cogliano says tonight's game is something the Ducks can build on as their five-game road trip continues.
"We know the position we're in, but we gained a point in a tough place to play," said Cogliano, who found chemistry with new linemates Carter Rowney and Daniel Sprong. "We just have to focus on this road trip. We didn't get two points, but it was a good start for the next four. We played a stronger game defensively. This is one of the best teams in the league. We played much more sound defensively than we did against Pittsburgh. We should've won the game, but the point is a good start."

Cogliano ended a 16-game scoring drought, Sprong finished with two assists and Rowney set a single-game regular-season career high in assists/points (3). (Rowney had three assists in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final vs. Ottawa on May 21, 2017 with Pittsburgh).
The Ducks' five-game road trip continues on Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings from Little Caesars Arena.
