PRE-GAME STORY

DETROIT, MI - The Devils return to where it all began tonight in Detroit. Back in October, the club came into Detroit with a 3-3-0 record and defeated the Red Wings 6-2. It was the first of 13 straight wins.
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff talked about what he sees different in the club now from that time in mid-October.
"There's two parts," he began. "We're starting to get a little bit healthier which makes us a better team. We played a game where our gaps were tight, we stayed close to people in all three zones. A little loose to start when we played them the first time but we tightened things up and we're going to have to be tight tonight."
After that great stretch, the Devils had a rocky December where they slumped at times. But at other times during the 1-7-1 stretch, they played well and didn't get the results due to a lack of finish.
"We've tried to keep the focus on that next game and not get too high or too low," said Ruff. "There were a lot of games in this recent stretch where we haven't won where we deserved to win but didn't score. Instead of finding ways to win, you'll find a way or a puck will go off something, a tip will go in and all of a sudden you lose a hockey game."
The Devils head coach added that he's tried to change how players are receiving messaging.
"With different lineups, with injuries, you have to change parts of your game and part of your approach. 82 games is a long season. It's a lot of meetings with same guys standing in front of teams. Different voice from time to time, changed things up. We focus on what needs to be done that day to be better tomorrow."
HISCHIER AND TATAR LIKELY TO PLAY
The big question going into the game was whether Nico Hischier and Tomas Tatar would play. Both missed practice on Tuesday due to maintenance days.
"We're hopeful both guys will play," said Ruff. "They skated this morning and just waiting on an update for them"
Hischier added that he feels ready to go.
"I felt alright out there but I think I'll be fine. Just looking forward for tonight."
The Devils captain talked about the injury, which happened late in the game against Carolina.
"It didn't feel great. It hit me in a spot where I'm not protected well. It's definitely bruised but it should feel alright tonight."

Head-to-Head
This is the third and final meeting of the season between the Devils and Red Wings. Detroit won the first meeting at Prudential Center on October 15 -- the Devils' home opener -- by a score of 5-2. Ten days later, the Devils defeated the Red Wings in Detroit 6-2.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division, one point ahead of the Rangers and Capitals. They remain five points up on the Penguins and Islanders who are tied for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They are also seven points behind Carolina for top spot in the Metro.
Jack Hughes continues to be the team's leading scorer with 21 goals and 42 points in 37 games.
New Jersey is 2-2-1 in its last five games with both regulation losses coming against the league-leading Boston Bruins.
Red Wings Team Scope:
Detroit is five points out of a playoff spot with 39 points on the season. Their leading scorer is Dylan Larkin with 13 goals and 32 points through 34 games.
The Wings have picked up points in four of their last five games (3-1-1) with their most recent game being a 4-2 win over Ottawa on New Year's Eve.
With eight players out due to injury, the Red Wings are in a tough position. They may see forward Robby Fabbri return to the lineup and play his first game of the season after missing the first three months with a torn ACL.
By the Numbers:
Dougie Hamilton ranks sixth in the NHL in scoring by defensemen with 31 points through 37 games. Hamilton has four points in two games against Detroit this season to lead the Devils, along with Jesper Bratt.
Dylan Larkin's four points in two games leads the way for the Red Wings. Dominik Kubalik is second.
At 13-2-1, the Devils have the fewest number of regulation losses on the road this season in the entire NHL.
