The Devils will try to tackle the tough task of beating the Islanders at Prudential Center Sunday night. The game is a rematch of Thursday's 4-1 loss on the Island. In that game, Nathan Bastian was the lone goal scorer with Scott Wedgewood making 31 saves in his first start of the season.

PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ -The Devils look to bounce back from Thursday's loss to the Islanders in the back half of a home-and-home series.
Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said that he wasn't a huge fan of how the team played at Nassau Coliseum.
"Puck management, number one. We weren't very good with the puck early on. We had it in the right areas but didn't make good decisions. We turned it over or misplayed it. If our puck management was better, we'd have it more. And I think it's the reason we haven't drawn any penalties," Ruff stated following practice on Saturday.
"We had some bad changes, some bad decisions at times."
LINEUP CHANGES
The result of Thursday's performance was a shake-up of the forward lines. The club will be going with the following setup up front:
Sharangovich - Hughes - Palmieri
Wood - Zajac - Kuokkanen
Gusev - Zacha - Merkley
Johnsson - McLeod - Bastian
The top line remained in tact but lines two through four saw some changes. Kuokkanen replaced Jesper Boqvist with Miles Wood and Travis Zajac, Andreas Johnsson joined Mike McLeod and Nate Bastian while Nick Merkley was skating with Nikita Gusev and Pavel Zacha.
"It gives him an opportunity to provide more offense to the top end," Ruff said of Kuokkanen. "Gives him a better look. I really liked McLeod and Bastian, didn't want to break them up. A lot of times there's pairs for me. We're going to have Merkley coming in, we have a lot of options."
As far as Merkley is concerned, Ruff felt that he may be able to help spark the club's offense.

PRACTICE REPORT | Making Some Moves

"He can give us some scoring. He gave us some scoring at camp so it's something we want to look at."
Stepping into the lineup on Sunday poses a challenge for Merkley, moving from the taxi squad into game action.
"It's tough skating with three guys, but we got into some practices and been battling hard and trying to stay in shape, be ready to go and get the call," Markley stated.
He was also asked what success would look like for him tomorrow.
"I think just getting involved for a check, being a pit bull, as I said earlier in the camp and getting them the puck, creating chances just doing all the little things right," Merkley noted. "Being good in the D zone and just play hard the whole time."
MORE SHOTS NEEDED
Ruff was also asked about the low shot totals of some of his forwards, Jesper Boqvist (who was assigned to the taxi squad this morning) with only two shots while Kuokkanen and Andreas Johnsson had only one each.
"We are passing up chances. Let's use Kuokkanen as an example, last game he had it at the bottom of the circle but didn't shoot. Looked for something better. Attack the net from tough angles. Attack the net on wraparounds. We're getting too cute. We need to go inside, we need someone to go there," said Ruff.
"We've passed up opportunities to get pucks in the paint, get pucks on the goaltender."
NO CHANGES ON BLUELINE EXPECTED
The Devils aren't expected to make any changes on the blueline, where they've had the following lineup for the past four games:
Murray - Subban
Kulikov - Severson
Smith - Tennyson
Normally, the third pairing is where a team might be most inclined to make a change, with Connor Carrick and Will Butcher waiting in the wings, but for the Devils, their third pairing has been dynamite this season offensively. Smith has a point in each of his first four games, the first Devils blueliner to ever do so to start a career. Tennyson leads the team with a +6 rating, while Smith is +4 and tied for second on the squad.
"I think he's played well. There are some areas defensively, some of his defensive decisions, that he'll get better at. I thought as the game went on he really started to feel more comfortable to make more plays," Ruff said of Smith's performance against the Islanders.
As for Tennyson, while the plus/minus stat isn't always the best indicator, it's one not to be ignored.
"The only way to get to +6 is to be on for a lot of goals for," noted Ruff. "He's been on for almost all our even strength goals for. Sometimes the stat is misleading. He's been playing well, he's doing a good job getting pucks to the net which leads to the goals for."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (2-1-1) AT ISLANDERS (3-1-0)
TV: MSG+ at 7:00 PM ET
Head-to-Head:
The Devils face the Islanders in their second of two consecutive games against each other this week. Thursday's game is at Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders took the first meeting 4-1 thanks to two power-play goals in the third after the Devils had cut the lead to one in the second with Nathan Bastian's first goal of the season.
Devils Team Scope:
On Thursday, the Devils suffered their first regulation loss of the season to these very same Islanders. Scott Wedgewood got the start after Mackenzie Blackwood was placed on the league's COVID-19 protocol list.
The Devils are still without two of their top forwards in Nico Hischier (injury) and Jesper Bratt (quarantine). Jack Hughes paces the scoring with six points (2-4-6) through six games.
Islanders Team Scope:
The Islanders are riding two-straight wins, with one of those being against the Devils on Thursday night. They shutout the Bruins in the previous contest. Mathew Barzal leads the team in scoring with four points (2-2-4). He scored in their win against the Devils. Jordan Eberle scored twice that game.
By the Numbers:
During the 2019-20 season, the Devils and Islanders played twice last season with each team taking one win. … Jack Hughes' three-point performance on Tuesday was only the second time he achieved that so far in his career (Oct. 25, 2019, vs. Arizona). It was also the first time in his career that he had multiple goals in a game. … The Devils have picked up five out of eight possible points in their first four games this season. Last year, it took them eight games to get their first five points.
Injury Update:
Devils: Nico Hischier (leg) is out; Mackenzie Blackwood (COVID-19 protocol) is out; Aaron Dell, Sami Vatanen and Jesper Bratt are awaiting the completion of the visa and quarantine process
Islanders: Michael Dal Colle (undisclosed) is questionable.
