PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ -A contract negation kept Jesper Bratt out of training camp and the wait for a work visa followed by the mandatory quarantine period kept him out of the Devils season thus far. But the long wait is over.
Bratt was on the ice for morning skate today with his teammates for the first time this season.
"It was a great feeling walking in this morning and seeing everyone," said Bratt. "I mean, seeing everyone doing their routines over and over again, kind of brought back some good memories. It was a lot of fun and especially being out there on the ice with all the boys. So it was probably the most fun I had in a practice in a very long time."
The Brattman returns.
And the club will waste no time in deploying the forward.
"I will confirm that he's going to jump right into things," said Ruff. "We had a great discussion with him yesterday after he skated and we've been doing zoom video conferences with him on how we need to play and what the assignments are and he feels comfortable where he's at. It might be a little bit of an ease in, it just depends on how it goes."
The Devils players were all smiles with their teammate back on the ice Thursday morning.
"It was obviously really exciting to see him out there," said Jack Hughes. "He looked really good. So we're excited to play with him tonight and obviously that's a big boost for our lineup. We're excited and we're really happy to have him back."
With Bratt and Nico Hischier out of the lineup so far, the Devils have lacked that additional offensive punch. Structurally, they've looked like they're quickly buying into Ruff's systems. But the threat of offensive could improve. The club is 25th in the League in goals for with 14 in six games.
"I'd like him to score," said Ruff. "I'd like him to check, to be physical. And I'd like him to backcheck. I'd like all parts of his game to be really good for us. And I think we've had success because everybody has really bought into how we need to play."
Ruff says he has spent lots of time on Zoom calls with Bratt going over the team's structure and expectations. So Bratt isn't coming in blind. He understands how they want him and the rest of the players to play.
Bratt instantly becomes one of the Devils top offensive weapons in the lineup. The 22-year-old has 37 goals and 100 total points in 185 NHL games.
MR. 1500
Tonight will be Lindy Ruff's 1,500th NHL game behind the bench as the head guy. He's seventh all-time in League history.
"Obviously, it's a great milestone," said Ruff. "But I don't place a lot of value on it. It probably means I've been around a long time and learned a lot. I'm humbled by the opportunity to coach in that many games. That's for sure."
LINEUP NOTES
Nick Merkley was re-assigned to the taxi squad this morning to make room for Bratt. Lindy Ruff confirmed the defensive grouping remains untouched. Scott Wedgewood was in the starter's net and is likely to get the call tonight. Lines will become apparent after warmups around 6:30 p.m.
