PRE-GAME STORY
WASHINGTON, DC -The Devils finish their back-to-back showdown with Washington Friday night at Capital One Arena.
The Devils suffered a 4-3 loss in the first matchup Thursday. It was a frustrating loss for the team considering New Jersey had 1-0 and 2-1 leads. The club also battled back to tie the game late in the third period at 3-3 with a power-play goal, however, the Capitals responded by scoring the game-winner 62 seconds later.
Adding insult to injury, the winner came on a puck that deflected off of New Jersey defenseman Damon Severson and into his own net.
"Last night we didn't execute one of our D-zone breakouts after getting a great power-play goal by (Jesper) Bratt," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "You can say they got a lucky bounce, which they did, but at the same time if we execute leaving the zone they probably don't get the opportunity.
"The disappointment of not being able to at least get a point out of that game certainly hurt because we played hard, we battled back, we got the special teams we wanted to get. It seemed (every time) we gave up a goal right after we scored a goal."
The Devils are now 0-4-1 in the season series against Washington. But that record line doesn't tell the whole story. Four of those five games were decided by one goal, including a painful overtime loss on March 9 after the Devils scored three third-period goals to force the extra period.
"If you look at the (March 9) game we played here we fought hard in the third period to tie the game," Ruff said. "We hit a goal post. We had another great opportunity in the third to put the game away. We didn't get it done. It went to overtime and we ended up losing."
New Jersey has gone blow-for-blow with Washington, which is one of the best teams in the NHL and a Stanley Cup contender. Despite being so close, the Devils haven't been able to find a way to land a knockout punch.
"We've been right there," Ruff said. "We haven't been able to finish some of our really good opportunities, whether that means to build a lead in the game or stay in a game that's 3-3.
"One thing I know for sure is that our guys will dig in. We've been playing well for the last couple of weeks. We need to be able to keep playing at that level. We also need to find ways to beat a team like Washington. They're a very good team."
FACE-OFF
The Devils' style is built on puck possession. And one of the best ways to possess the puck is to win face-offs and gain possession. It's an area of the game that New Jersey has worked on all season. Steady progress has been made over the course of the year.
"We've really tried to go the extra mile to improve that," Ruff said. "(Assistant coach) Chris Taylor has been working really hard with all of the centermen improving that part of the game. I think he's done an excellent job of breaking down what the opposition centers are doing and finding the best way to beat them."
The Devils have won the face-off circle battle in two of their last three games, including going 32-28 Thursday night in Washington. Pavel Zacha, who has a team-best 51.7-winning percentage, went 13-6 in the dot.
Some of the team's face-off success can be attributed to their head coach putting the centermen in a position to be successful, which sometimes includes using two centers in case one gets tossed from the circle or taking into account which side of the ice the draw is taking place.
"Part of my responsibility is trying to put the centermen in a position to win the face-off," Ruff said, "if I can put a lefty or righty on his strong side."
Although the center gets the bulk of the credit for winning face-offs - the stat falls into his column - a lot of times a face-off win is a team effort.
"The other thing is (to) treat it like a line of scrimmage," Ruff said. "A lot of face-offs are sitting there. There's a 50-50 battle that will determine who wins the faceoff. I think our wingers are doing a better job of getting inside and helping out with some of those, along with our defense."
