Never get too high, never get too low. That's the refrain you'll hear in the Devils locker room no matter the circumstance.
On Friday it was possibly the biggest high of the season, with the Devils defeating the defending Cup champions, the Colorado Avalanche, in a 1-0 game. The win is in the past and what lies ahead is what's the focus.
"As a pro you want to keep this running in the right direction and so next game is a big one for us," defenseman Brendan Smith said after today's practice. "It will definitely be a test in the room."
On Sunday afternoon the Columbus Blue Jackets will visit Prudential Center, New Jersey looking to string together a third consecutive victory.
Stay tuned to the Devils Notebook for updates, news, and notes from today's practice session!

A Visit From a Super Fan

Kevin Smith, American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer and noted Devils fan, stopped by to chat with New Jersey legend Ken Daneyko. Smith was quick to share his favorite memory as a fan, not missing a beat, sharing the first Stanley Cup championship as the moment to beat.
Daneyko and Smith share a bunch of laughs in the video - Dano with his signature hearty laugh - as the franchise prepares to honor the years of service that Daneyko has given to the club and the undeniable special relationship he has to the franchise and it's fans. Daneyko has spent his entire career with the Devils in one way or another and a special tribute to the man they call 'Mr. Devil' will take place before Sunday's 2 p.m. puck drop against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Current Devils Appreciation for Mr. Devil

Damon Severson is the longest-tenured Devil on the roster right now and Daneyko has been around his entire career. Count Severson among those who look forward to giving Daneyko his moment.
"You can just tell he lives and breaths (the Devils)," Severson said after today's practice. "It's pretty cool, he's really passionate about Devils hockey, he was a Devil for life and one of the hardest working, most known players of all time in this organization. It's pretty cool to be able to celebrate a guy like that."

Never Too High, Never Too Low - Is It That Easy?

You hear the phrase constantly, never get too high, never get too low, especially with a long 82-game season. But is it harder to return to the median after a big win like the one against the Avalanche, as it is to overcome a loss and look ahead?
Brendan Smith says that type of attitude comes with a level of maturity.
"I think you try and preach even-keel," Smith said, "and I think the biggest thing is after a big win like it was (against the Avalanche), if you come out and stink it up the next game, what's the point? So you want to keep building on those performances. It becomes a test to ourselves to keep moving this in the right direction. I know we've been cliché in saying to try to get better every day and be hard to play against but if you take those games off, or are being inconsistent, that's the opposite of what we're trying to accomplish here."
