11.17 takeaways

For just the second time this season, the New Jersey Devils had to settle a game after 60 minutes of regulation play. The Devils dropped their contest in overtime with just 50.3 seconds left on the clock as the Red Wings sprung on a 2-on-1 to beat Keith Kinkaid glove-slide. The Devils fall to the Red Wings in overtime 3-2.

In a third game without Nico Hischier and a first without Sami Vatanen, the Devils picked up just a single point against the Red Wings.
Here are 10 takeaways from the game:
1. Sami Vatanen missed his first game of the season. The Devils defender was placed on injured reserve prior to the game with a lower body injury, retroactive to November 15. The absence of Vatanen paved way for Egor Yakovlev to play in only his second NHL game and his first at home at Prudential Center. Yakovlev was paired with Mirco Mueller Yakovlev played 15:39.
2. The New Jersey Devils hosted Military Appreciation Day against the Red Wings Saturday afternoon. Devils players warmed up wearing military themed camo jerseys which have been signed as are currently being auctioned off through Nov. 25 with all proceeds benefiting initiatives serving the military and their families through the Kyle Palmieri Foundation. 1. It has been a long-time coming for Devils forward Pavel Zacha. In his 13th game this season, Zacha finally has his first point of the season. Centering the second line, Zacha scored from down on one knee against the Red Wings at 11:35 of the first period to put the Devils up 1-0 on Detroit.

Jesper Bratt made a tape-to-tape pass from across the ice that reached Zacha, with Detroit netminder Jonathan Bernier caught on the opposite post. Zacha fired home the shot, for his first goal since April 5, 2018.
    4. The first period alone produced 15 shots on goal for the Devils. That included 11 different Devils recording at least a shot on goal, while Stefan Noesen led the squad with three.
    5. The first short-handed goal of the season goes to a likely suspect. Forward Blake Coleman put New Jersey up 2-0 on Detroit at 15:53 of the second period, with Ben Lovejoy serving a holding penalty in the box.

Coleman followed up the first three-point game of his career on Thursday night, with the Devils first shorthanded goal of the season - an area where he excelled last year, tied for the team lead (Brian Gibbons) with three on the season. The goal was Coleman's seventh of the season and was assisted on by Damon Severson and Andy Greene.
    6. The Red Wings didn't force Keith Kinkaid into making too many saves during the matinee outing. Kinkaid faced 24 shots in regulation from the Wings and another six in overtime. The Red Wings first goal of the night came off Luke Glendening's stick and broke Kinkaid's shutout streak at 114:22, dating back to the third period against the Penguins this past Tuesday.
    7. With 40 shots on net to close out the game, the Devils have now recorded 30-plus shots in seven of their last eight games.
    8. Not a single power play was awarded to the Devils on Saturday afternoon. For the first time since January 30, 2017 at Buffalo the Devils did not get a single second of playing time with the man advantage. This is only the 29th time in team history that the Devils have gone without a power play in a game but the second time it has happened against the Red Wings. 9. While the power play didn't get any work against Detroit, the penalty-kill went 2-for-2, after going 4-for-4 against the Flyers on Thursday night. The Devils have a current streak of nine straight successful penalty kills.
    10. Another matinee awaits the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. They will be on the ice at 5 p.m. in Carolina on Sunday.
