Pezzetta has done more than just stick around, having quickly become a fan favorite while picking up 44 games of NHL experience since his initial call up.
Most recently however, the six-foot-one, 216-pound forward had been sidelined for six games since leaving the game on March 26 with an upper-body injury, putting his homecoming plans in doubt.
"To get the nod that I'm in the lineup tonight... I know I was hurt, and I was worried that I wasn't going to be healthy in time for this game, so I'm just so happy that I'm able to play here. It's going to be a dream come true for me. I'm just really excited."
Hockey Night in Canada… starring Americans
At the other end of the ice, star Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews has been enjoying a career year with 97 points in 66 games.
Although containing the 24-year-old will be key to the Canadiens' efforts at Scotiabank Arena, the American forward also serves as a blueprint to follow for countryman Cole Caufield.
"He shoots from everywhere, he gets a lot of looks each game, and he's special for a player like me to watch. I think a lot of people learn from him, and he's a special player," acknowledged Caufield, who is a fellow product of the US National Team Development Program. "He's for sure a guy that I look up to, and maybe one day I'll kind of get close to [in terms of success]."
