MONTREAL – As part of Black History Month, the Canadiens are celebrating Quebec's Black community at the Bell Centre on Saturday.

For the occasion, the team collaborated with MALICIOUZ, a Montreal-born painter and muralist with Haitian roots, to create a custom logo for the game.

Her murals featuring Black identities can be found in cities around the world, and on Saturday her latest work will be displayed throughout the Canadiens arena.

“The vibrant colors in the frank-gazing face are my way of representing Black excellence,” described the visual artist, who is also currently featured at the Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec. “For me, it’s a way of seeing the world, and being self-aware in the face of life. It’s the stance, demeanor, frankness, and authenticity we carry through life, guided by our heritage and freedom to be ourselves.”

This character represents both the physical (2) and spiritual (1) presence.

The hands symbolize helping one another and solidarity. They remind us that the balance between individuals and society requires a human connection and mutual safeguarding. The flame represents the life force that we preserve through empathy.

This character’s attitude and quiet strength represent the energy to persevere. The aesthetic represents personal and artistic freedom.

I view the hummingbird as an animal that brings a touch of magic, curiosity, beauty and wonder. It symbolizes hope and renewal.

This character, with her braids blowing in the wind, represents the freedom to be oneself and live with ease. Her hairstyle is rooted in African, Caribbean and Afro-descendant cultures.

The Sankofa symbol comes from the Akan culture of West Africa (Ghana). The bird looking behind itself reminds us of the importance of looking at the past to understand the present and to progress. It highlights memory as a resource.
