Goaltender Cayden Primeau made his fifth start of the season.

The Avalanche opened the scoring on the power play. With Ben Chiarot in the box for holding, Alex Newhook one-timed the puck from high inside the circle to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Newhook's tally was the only one of the opening frame, with Colorado leading 23-12 in shots after 20 minutes.
Colorado doubled its lead in the second, once again on the power play. This time, it was Valeri Nichushkin with a one-timer from low in the slot to beat Primeau and make it 2-0 for the home side.
The Habs got back in the game later in the period, however. Tyler Toffoli shipped a long-distance saucer pass from inside the Montreal blue line all the way to Nick Suzuki, who took it in to the Colorado end and fed Artturi Lehkonen with a cross-ice pass which he one-timed past Avs starter Darcy Kuemper for his fifth of the season.
Suzuki and Toffoli picked up helpers on the play. It was a third point in three games for all three of the Habs who figured on the goal.

Montreal headed to the room down by one. Colorado outshot the Canadiens 11-10 in the second stanza.
The Avalanche thought they got a third 4:10 into the third period when Nazem Kadri found the back of the net, but the Habs won a coach's challenge on the play after video review determined the play was offside.
The Habs took advantage of the break several minutes later with the Avs down a man after a high-stick to Jeff Petry's face. Montreal scored late in the power play when Christian Dvorak recovered the rebound from Mike Hoffman's shot and sent it cross-crease to a waiting Suzuki, who buried it for his eighth of the season and fourth on the man advantage.
Dvorak and Hoffman picked up assists on the play. It was Montreal's fifth straight game with a power play goal.
