For generations, Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts gang has been a beloved part of popular culture, creating lasting memories for fans of all ages. Among the many adventures of the gang, ice hockey remained a recurring theme.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, the Columbus Blue Jackets will celebrate that connection with Hockey Halloween: A Peanuts Spooktacular. The themed night will include an appearance by Snoopy, a CBJ X Peanuts pillowcase for trick-or-treating, photo opportunities, a costume contest and more.

For the Peanuts-loving hockey fans, a Peanuts ticket package is available that includes a Snoopy bobblehead and a ticket to the game.

Scott Shillet, vice president of global licensing (toys, hardlines, food, gaming and promotions) at Peanuts Worldwide LLC, describes the pairing between Peanuts and hockey as authentic because it all started with Schulz’s passion for the sport.

“Charles Schulz himself was a big hockey fan as well as a hockey player,” said Shillet.

Over the years, Schulz found many ways to translate his love for hockey into his world of Peanuts.

Schulz found plenty of ways to incorporate his love of hockey into the world of Peanuts, from pond hockey games to Woodstock the Zamboni driver.

In 1969, he had Snoopy’s Home Ice built in Santa Rosa, California, next to the office where most of the Peanuts comic strips were drawn. The rink is the host of Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament each year.

“[Schulz] would play there weekly,” said Shillet, “and played hockey even late in his life.”

Hockey is also featured in the classic movie “A Boy Named Charlie Brown,” which features a montage of Snoopy playing the sport.

"I think there's a lot of similarities with sports and the Peanuts characters and life, like in that there's highs and lows," said Shillet. “And I think it's something that people can identify with as well.”

That connection continues to resonate with fans today, including Susan Ehler, a longtime Blue Jackets season ticket holder, who welcomes the collaboration between two of her favorite things.

“When I saw that [the Blue Jackets] were combining with Peanuts, I thought ‘oh, two of my favorite things! How fun,’” said Ehler. “I’ve been a Peanuts fan since I was a kid. In fact, when I was little, I had a Peanuts bedroom.”

She looks forward to adding the Snoopy bobblehead to her bobblehead collection that currently consists of Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Rick Nash, and more.

Emphasizing the club's familial atmosphere, Ehler notes that this crossover creates a memorable arena experience for fans of all ages.

“The Blue Jackets make everything about family. Peanuts are something that both kids and adults like, so it’s an experience that both young and old can be a part of,” said Ehler.

The Blue Jackets are excited to bring together this timeless combination of love for hockey and love for peanuts.

"When you combine your favorite team with one of your favorite brands, it's like, how can you say no to that,” said Shillet.
