Through GOAL!, the Blue Jackets aim to remove barriers of entry to the sport and offer children the opportunity to experience the excitement of hockey without the time commitment or cost of purchasing equipment. Designed for 5 to 8-year-old kids who have no prior hockey or skating experience, these on-ice clinics will introduce the exciting sport of hockey in a fun and safe environment.
During each one-hour session, GOAL! teaches the basic skills of skating and hockey including stickhandling, passing and shooting. Participants will receive on-ice instruction by USA Hockey certified coaches, complimentary skate rental, an ice hockey stick and a Blue Jackets GOAL! jersey to keep.
Upon graduating from GOAL!, parents will receive a "Next Steps" guide with information on how to continue on the path to becoming a hockey player through programs or classes offered at local rinks.
Participants are encouraged to bring a helmet from home (bike helmet is acceptable) along with a pair of winter or hockey gloves. A limited number of helmets and gloves will be available at each session. Hockey equipment is not required to participate. Basic skating experience is recommended. Each session will be limited to the first 50 participants.
The GOAL! program Powered by Performance Columbus is supported by the Industry Growth Fund (IGF), which was created by the NHLPA and the NHL as part of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, in order to help grow the game of hockey.
GOAL! is intended for new, first-time skaters, not those already in a hockey program. Children currently participating in a league or hockey classes are not eligible. In an effort to accommodate as many families as possible, GOAL! is a one-time participation program. Experienced skaters should check out the Blue Jackets Learn to Play Program, which provides free equipment along with 6 weeks of lessons.
