The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Ivan Provorov to a seven-year, $59.5 million contract extension ($8.5 million AAV) through the 2031-32 National Hockey League season, club President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Don Waddell announced today.

“Ivan Provorov is the consummate pro and has been an important player during his two seasons in Columbus, so we are thrilled that he will continue to be a Blue Jacket for many years to come,” said Waddell. “He is smart, talented, can play in all situations and has been remarkably consistent and durable throughout his career and we believe his best seasons are ahead of him.”

Provorov, 28, has registered 77 goals and 205 assists for 282 points with 247 penalty minutes, 1,317 blocked shots and 1,277 shots on goal, while averaging 23:46 of ice time in 696 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers since making his debut in 2016-17. He has registered six campaigns of 30-plus points, five seasons with 150 or more blocked shots and has skated in all contests of a season eight times during his nine-year NHL career.

The 6-1, 213-pound defenseman has posted 12-53-65 with 51 PIM, 282 blocked shots and 207 shots on goal in 164 career games with Columbus since being acquired as part of a three-team trade involving the Flyers and Los Angeles Kings on June 6, 2023. He leads all Blue Jackets in games played and blocked shots (282) and ranks second in TOI (22:45), while ranking second among club defensemen in even-strength points (52), assists, points and shots on goal since joining the club.

Provorov registered 7-26-33 with 31 PIM, 127 blocked shots and 100 shots on 23:21 time on ice in 82 contests with Columbus in 2024-25. He ranked second on the team in ice time and third in blocked shots and was second among club defensemen in assists and points. He set a single-season career high in assists in 2023-24 with 5-27-32 in 82 appearances with the team.

Originally selected by Philadelphia in the first-round, seventh overall, at the 2015 NHL Draft, Provorov recorded 65-152-217 with 196 PIM, 1,035 blocked shots, 693 hits and 1,070 shots on goal on 24:05 TOI in 532 contests with the club from 2016-23. He set a franchise record for consecutive games played after skating in 403-straight contests from Oct. 14, 2016 – Jan. 1, 2022. The four-time Barry Ashbee Trophy winner (best defenseman as voted on by Philadelphia media) set single-season career highs in 2017-18 after logging 17-24-41 with 20 PIM with a +17 plus/minus rating and 203 shots on goal in 82 contests for the Flyers.

The Yaroslavl, Russia native collected 36-98-134 in 122 games with the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings from 2014-16 and was named the league’s top defenseman (Bill Hunter Trophy) in 2015-16. He represented Russia at two IIHF World Championships in 2017 and 2021, helping the country capture a bronze medal at the 2017 tournament and was named a Top-Three Player for his team in 2021. He also earned silver medals at the 2015 and 2016 IIHF World Junior Championships.
