What They're Saying

Brad Larsen keeps his hair close-cropped, which is all the better. If he had long, flowing locks, he likely would have been tearing them out at points of Saturday's 6-5 win over Edmonton.
It doesn't take much experience watching hockey to know that a game in which 11 goals are scored is a coach's nightmare, and the Blue Jackets certainly took a circuitous route to the victory. Columbus built a 4-0 lead just 26 minutes into the game, only to watch Edmonton erase it in the next nine minutes of play.
But with the score 4-4 going to the third and momentum wearing an Oilers sweater, the Blue Jackets battled back, getting a pair of goals from Jack Roslovic in the final frame and then withstanding a final onslaught from the visitors.
When asked afterward if he could sense the sold-out crowd on Kids Takeover Day having fun, Larsen answered like a coach.
"I was having a lot of fun," Larsen said. "And then the fun went away for a while, then I was having some more fun. I think you can probably pick those moments."
But all kidding aside, the Blue Jackets did a lot of things well, including standout days from Jack Roslovic (2-2-4), Patrik Laine (1-2-3), Kirill Marchenko (2-0-2) and Boone Jenner (1-1-2) plus 43 saves from Joonas Korpisalo. The Blue Jackets also handled the massive momentum swings against a good team like a squad beyond its years.
So in the end, it was fun. At least for some people.
"Yeah, probably for the fans," Laine deadpanned. "I'm sure the coaching staff didn't love the game, but it doesn't matter at the end of the day. We got two points, and it's the only thing that matters."

Know The Foe: Minnesota Wild

Head coach:Dean Evason (Fourth season)
Season Stats: Goals per game: 2.81 (26th) | Scoring defense: 2.73 (8th) | PP: 23.4 percent (8th) | PK: 82.1 percent (6th)
The narrative:Minnesota came into this season looking for a breakthrough, but one could argue things look like this is the same old Wild. The franchise has made the playoffs in nine of the past 10 seasons, but it is yet to make a conference final, let alone the Stanley Cup Final. With this year's team currently in a race for a Western Conference playoff spot, one could argue the Wild have a lot to do to prove this year's squad is any different from those that came before.
2022-23 leaders: One thing this Wild team has that some of its previous iterations maybe were lacking is a superstar, as Kirill Kaprizov is one of the best scorers in the league. Kirill "The Thrill" is tied for 10th in the NHL with 34 goals, and his mark of 68 points leads the squad. Mats Zuccarello is next with a 20-36-56 line, while Joel Eriksson Ek has become a dependable scorer with 21 goals among his 46 points and Matt Boldy has a 16-23-39 line at 21 years old. Calen Addison leads the defensemen with a 3-24-27 line.
In net, veteran Marc-Andre Fleury leads the way with 34 starts and is 17-13-3 with a 2.89 GAA and .904 save percentage after shutting out the Jackets on Thursday. In addition, 24-year-old Filip Gustavsson has taken over as the top goalie in February with season marks of 15-8-3, 2.11 and .928.
What's new:Gustavsson's emergence has helped the team earn points in seven of the last eight, as Minnesota is 5-1-2 in that span while allowing just 13 goals. Scoring is an issue, though, as the Wild has reached the four-goal mark in just one of its last 16 games. Outside of Kaprizov (seven goals in the last 11 games), finding a consistent scorer has been a challenge of late.
Trending:This is another series that has been relatively even over the years, as the CBJ's fellow class of 2000 expansion brother had split the last 14 with Columbus coming into this year. After Minnesota's 2-0 win Thursday, the Blue Jackets are 7-6-2 against the WIld since the start of the 2014-15 season.
Former CBJ:None.

3 Keys to the Game

Get to the net: Fleury left a lot of rebounds and misplayed a few pucks Thursday, but the Jackets couldn't take advantage. The opportunities were there, though.
Man to man: Minnesota plays a physical brand of hockey and a man defense that Columbus has to beat in order to get the aforementioned opportunities.
Jekyll or Hyde: Columbus was shut out by Minnesota on Thursday then scored six goals two days later. Which CBJ offense will show up?

3 Stats to Know
  • Kirill Marchenko notched his third career multigoal game yesterday with two goals. He is the second rookie in franchise history to record at least three multigoal games in a single season, joining Serge Aubin in 2000-01.
  • With two goals and two assists in yesterday's win, Roslovic posted his second four-point night of the season and the fourth of his career.
  • Milestone watch: Erik Gudbranson is set to play in the 700th game of his NHL career (28-76-104, 699 GP). … Gavin Bayreuther is set to play in the 100th game of his NHL career (5-17-22, 99 GP).
Who's Hot

Kirill Marchenko's 16 goals are the most in franchise history for a player in his first 35 NHL games. They also are tied for third-most ever for a CBJ rookie with Boone Jenner (2013-14) and Cole Sillinger (2021-22), and he is second in the league among rookie goal scorers behind only Seattle's Matty Beniers (19). … Defenseman Adam Boqvist has a 2-13-15 line in the last 19 games and has tied his career high with 14 assists this season. … Patrik Laine has 8-14-22 in the last 20 games. … Gaudreau has 10-35-45 in his last 45 games. … With Marchenko and Kent Johnson (12) both in double digits, this is the third time in CBJ history that two rookies have at least 10 goals. The previous instances were 2000-01 (Aubin and David Vyborny, each with 13) and 2016-17 (Pierre-Luc Dubois with 20 and Sonny Milano with 14). ... Johnson's 28 points (12-16-28) are the 10th-most ever for a CBJ rookie. He ranks tied for sixth in the NHL in goals and is fifth in points among rookies. … CBJ rookies lead all NHL teams in goals and place second in points with 36-35-71 in 59 games.
