The Chicago Blackhawks selected Boqvist, a defenseman from Falun, Sweden, with the No. 8 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft after he made his Swedish Hockey League debut with Brynas, playing 15 SHL games in 2017-18.
Boqvist quickly signed with Chicago and came to North America, playing with London of the Ontario Hockey League in 2018-19 and scoring 20 goals and 60 points in 54 games. That was enough to convince the Blackhawks that he was ready for the NHL.
