Olivier 5Q

One of the newest forwards for the Blue Jackets, Mathieu Olivier is no stranger to hockey.
While growing up, he moved around the world following his father, Simon, who played professionally. Simon made it all the way to the AHL for two seasons and also played across North America and in Germany.

Born in Mississippi during his father's playing career but raised in Quebec, Mathieu played the last three seasons for the Nashville Predators. Now in Columbus, Olivier has made an impression on the right wing with the Blue Jackets, notching two goals, three assists and 41 penalty minutes in 22 games.
"He brings an element that we needed," head coach Brad Larsen said. "But he's a good hockey player. I think he's just steadily getting better. He is settling into a nice little role for us. With me, he's building trust. He moves well, he's a big body, he protects pucks well low. He's really working to add to his game."

But hockey isn't Olivier's only interest. He took some time to answer 5 Questions to let us know about life both in and out of hockey.
1. BlueJackets.com: So, I have heard a rumor that you play the drums. Is that true?
Mathieu Olivier: "I used to, yeah. I haven't been on them in a few years, but yeah."
What made you want to learn how to play?
"I guess I have always had an interest in music. For some reason, I got drawn to the drums. I was told I was pretty good at playing them at school, so I just kept going. Obviously, hockey kind of takes over and stuff, so playing them kind of just got pushed to the side."
2. What kind of music do you like to listen to?
"I like a little bit of everything. I hop around. I just listen to a wide variety, and it just depends on the day. But I would have to say country and rock would be the two main genres."
3. If you could play a different position in hockey, what would you choose?
"I would be a defenseman. Just play a lot more, get more minutes, and put up some more points too I guess."
4. Do you have any pregame rituals?
"No, not really. We usually wear suits to the game, so if we win, I'll keep the same suit. It's kind of weird, but it's just something I do."
5. If you could play any other sport, what would you choose?
"Professionally I would choose golf, 100 percent. A little bit of the LIV Tour, that would be unreal."
