DALLAS -- The Stars finally met their match in overtime.
Despite a late goal from Joe Pavelski to force the extra frame, the Stars fell short in a 4-3 OT loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of 18,012 at American Airlines Center on Thursday. Auston Matthews, the league's leading goal scorer, was simply too much to contain, scoring his second goal of the night two minutes into overtime.

It was a game that was controlled mostly by the Maple Leafs, who finished with 41 shots to the Stars' 18. Matthews was a dominant force all game, tallying two on 12 shots to give Toronto its sixth win in the past seven games. His first of two goals gave him 55 on the season, passing Rick Vaive (54 goals in 1981-82) for the most goals in Leafs franchise history. His game winner set the record for the most goals in a season by a U.S.-born player, surpassing Jimmy Carson in 1987-88 and Kevin Stevens in 1992-93.
Scott Wedgewood did everything he could, stopping 37 of the 41 shots in his first loss in three starts with Dallas. At the other end, Jack Campbell turned aside 15 of 18.

The Stars earned the point by erasing three separate one-goal deficits on goals from Tyler Seguin, John Klingberg and Pavelski. Though the OT loss is disappointing, the Stars are now two points ahead of Vegas for the second wild card with two games in hand.
