The Dallas Stars have not fared well coming out of breaks in their schedule this season, but they hope this time will be different. The Stars are 0-3-0 after extended time off, including the Christmas break, their bye week, and the All-Star break.
Now they are coming off a four-day stretch of no games, but this one had a twist. After taking one day off the Stars then practiced for three straight days. That's an opportunity they weren't afforded during the previous breaks when it was league-mandated time off.

GAME DAY CENTRAL: [Schwartz talks Stars-Blues on Counterattack | What to watch for tonight]
"It's a lot different," said Stars coach Ken Hitchcock. "Before you'd have one hockey practice and you couldn't pack it all in, and then you'd go out and play, and every time it's been kind of loose, which is natural. We themed every day, and we had a couple of hard practices. We'll see. The big challenge when you are on a break is getting up to speed with a team that has played quite a bit. They played a more recent game than we did, in a tough building and in a hard game. We're going to have to get up to that emotional level."
Getting up to speed will be key tonight since their first game out of this break is against a Central Division rival and a team they are chasing in the standings in the St. Louis Blues. The Stars (33-20-4) are two points behind the Blues (34-21-4) with two games in hand, and if the Stars win in regulation they will move past St. Louis into third place in the Central.
"Not just this game but every game from here on out is going to be an important game," said Stars goaltender Ben Bishop. "It's an important game and a team we are chasing, but I don't think this game is any more important than the next 15 after that. We've just got to come prepared, play our game and stick to the game plan."
The Stars will get defenseman Marc Methot back tonight. The veteran defenseman has missed 41 of the last 42 games due to a knee injury.

"You always have that little bit of nervousness that sets in, just making sure that I can come in and do the job that I need to do," Methot said. "But surprisingly calm. I've been around long enough that I know what I need to do. My job will be pretty simple."
Methot is expected to skate on the third defense pair tonight with Stephen Johns. Julius Honka is the expected healthy scratch on defense.
Antoine Roussel, who has missed the last two practices with a back issue, did not take part in this morning's optional skate this morning and is out for tonight.
"Not ready, not 100 percent," Hitchcock said of Roussel.
With Roussel not playing, Gemel Smith is expected to return to the lineup after sitting out the last five games as a healthy scratch. The Stars recalled forward Jason Dickinson from the Texas Stars of the AHL this morning, but he is not expected to play.
Bishop will get the start in goal for the Stars, who are wrapping up a three-game homestand.

Blues Watch

Jake Allen will get the start in goal tonight for the Blues. Allen is 19-16-2 with a 2.74 goals against average and .908 save percentage. The Blues are coming off a 4-3 overtime loss at Nashville in which they led 3-0 after two periods.
