20230109 Preview

Don Granato cancelled practice Sunday in favor of an off-ice meeting, a reality that could be the norm for the Sabres as they navigate a grueling month of January.
The Sabres' opened a run of 13 games in 22 days with their victory over the Minnesota Wild at KeyBank Center on Saturday. The stretch continues tonight against Philadelphia, the first leg of a back-to-back set that concludes against Winnipeg on Tuesday.
"How do we maximize energy?" Granato said. "So many games are won and lost in this league based on energy level from one team compared to its competitor. … We'll do a lot more substituting video and video work for practice time. We took a day off yesterday for that reason."

Tickets for tonight are on sale now.
Coverage on MSG begins at 6:30 p.m. with puck drop on MSG and WGR 550 scheduled for 7.
Here are five things to know.
### 1. The schedule
One quirk of this January stretch is the repetitive nature of the schedule. The Sabres play on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday each of the next three weeks. Six of the next eight games are at home.
"I like the fact that if we're going to play four games a week, to have it in a set where you can get into a rhythm," Granato said.
### 2. The lineup
Craig Anderson is expected to start in goal. Here's the full projected lineup based on the morning skate:
| January 9 vs. Philadelphia | | --- | | LW | C | RW | | 53 Jeff Skinner | 72 Tage Thompson | 89 Alex Tuch | | 77 JJ Peterka | 24 Dylan Cozens | 22 Jack Quinn | | 37 Casey Mittelstadt | 17 Tyson Jost | 71 Victor Olofsson | | 28 Zemgus Girgensons | 19 Peyton Krebs | 21 Kyle Okposo | | | | | | LD | RD | G | | 23 Mattias Samuelsson | 26 Rasmus Dahlin | 41 Craig Anderson | | 25 Owen Power | 38 Kale Clague | 1 Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen | | 78 Jacob Bryson | 46 Ilya Lyubushkin | | | | | |
### 3. Comrie returns to Buffalo
UPDATE (5 p.m.) -The Sabres have activated Eric Comrie off injured reserve and assigned Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to Rochester. Comrie is expected to back up Anderson tonight.
Eric Comrie was back on the ice with the Sabres for their morning skate after a three-game conditioning stint in Rochester. Comrie remains on injured reserve but is nearing a return to the active roster.
Comrie made 34 saves on 36 shots in his first game, a 3-2 win over Toronto. He made a combined 45 saves on 52 shots in the following two games. They were his first games since he sustained a lower-body injury on November 16.
"The biggest thing for me is just getting into the game reps," he said. "I mean, six weeks is a long time to be (off). Especially for myself, I don't take that much time off. So, it was just good for me to get into some games and just get some reps and see the puck and see some plays."

4. Dahlin named 3rd Star of the Week
Rasmus Dahlin was named Third Star of the Week by the NHL on Monday afternoon, his second such honor this season. He was previously named First Star of the Week on October 25.
Dahlin has six points in two games last week, including a career-best five-point performance against Minnesota on Saturday. He scored two goals in that game, including the game-tying marker with 2:24 remaining in regulation.
Dahlin ranks 16th among all NHL players - and fifth in the Atlantic Division - with an average of 1.22 points per game this season. That number ranks second to Erik Karlsson among league defensemen.
