EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) announced today a $500,000 funding donation to the Alberta Cancer Foundation to contribute to pharmacy expansion and redevelopment at the Cross Cancer Institute.
The pharmacy expansion and redevelopment will help meet the growing demand on the Cross Cancer Institute. By expanding the capacity of the pharmacy at the Cross, they will be better able to serve more patients, including young adults and adolescents facing cancer. There will also be more space required to stock, store and prepare complex cancer treatments, which includes chemotherapy and immunotherapies along with other medications used in systemic therapies.
The Cross Cancer Institute leads the way in research, identifying new and novel treatments, and enhancing comfort for patients when they need it the most.
"The success of the EOCF's online 50/50 has provided an opportunity to offer funding to many charitable organizations in Northern Alberta and the EOCF is delighted to support the pharmacy expansion at the Cross Cancer Institute," said Corey Smith, EOCF Board Chair. "The EOCF has a long-standing partnership with the Cross Cancer Institute and the Alberta Cancer Foundation, dating back to the days when Glenn Anderson played with the Oilers. We also participate annually in the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer initiative to continually support and help fund cancer research in Alberta."
The EOCF has partnered with the Alberta Cancer Foundation and the Cure Cancer Foundation for the annual Hockey Fights Cancer fundraising campaign to help tackle hockey's most important fight. Net proceeds from last year's and this year's Hockey Fights Cancer online 50/50 will be directed to the pharmacy expansion at the Cross Cancer Institute
"We are incredibly grateful to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, and everyone who purchased a 50/50 ticket in support of Hockey Fights Cancer," said Dr. Charles Butts, Medical Director, Cross Cancer Institute and Alberta Cancer Foundation trustee. "These funds will be used to help the Cross Cancer Institute redevelop our pharmacy. This means we can care for patients more efficiently and meet the growing demand our cancer centre continues to face. On behalf of all the patients who will benefit from your generosity, we thank you."
As the fundraising partner to the 17 cancer centres in Alberta, including the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, the Alberta Cancer Foundation focuses on making life better for Albertans facing cancer by inspiring community support to raise funds for innovation in detection, treatment and care.
