Connor McDavid registered a pair of helpers, putting him up to 53 assists and 86 points in 2017-18.
Oscar Klefbom - who will eventually be shut down after a looming shoulder procedure - tallied one goal and one assist in 19:46 of ice time.
"I think I've played many games better than I did tonight but the puck went in," said Klefbom. "I'd rather score no goal and win a game. It's a tough one."
Drake Caggiula and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins rounded out the scoring, while Al Montoya made 36 saves on 40 shots - good for a .900 save percentage.
"I thought we handled the game pretty well and controlled it," said Montoya. "They battled back and got the extra bounce at the end."
The home side gained three separate regulation leads against San Jose, ultimately failing to maintain each of them as the Sharks stayed afloat through 60 minutes then pounced in overtime.
"We turned a few pucks over, which allowed them to get back into it," said Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan. "When our backup goaltender gives us a performance like that, we should be able to find a way to close it off."
It didn't take long for the Oilers to get their chances, as Edmonton jumped out with energy early in the game.
McDavid sprung Nugent-Hopkins on a breakaway just over a minute in but No. 93's wrist shot was stopped by San Jose netminder Martin Jones.
Leon Draisaitl then found himself at the side of the net with loads of time, firing a quick shot that Jones kicked out with his pad.
The pressure trickled down to the Oilers fourth line, who opened the scoring.
Zack Kassian held the puck behind the Sharks' net, sucking two defenders to him. As defenceman Brenden Dillon approached, Kassian threaded a behind-the-back pass through Dillon's skates right on Caggiula's tape. Caggiula buried his ninth of the season and 15th point 2:39 in.

"Against that team, you have to be prepared to start," said McLellan. "We did a good job in the 10-minute game, which has proven in the past to give us difficulty against them."
San Jose replied after an offensive zone turnover by Edmonton.
Draisaitl's pass was intercepted, causing Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl to march down the ice on a 2-on-1. Once they gained the Oilers zone, Couture fed Hertl in-flight and the Czech forehand one-timed the puck blocker side on Montoya to even the game up 1-1.
"He'd probably be the first one to tell you that he had a tough night," McLellan said of Draisaitl. "Definitely a tough night for him and his linemates but in 82 games, that's going to happen at some point.
"He's been able to pull us out of trouble, we couldn't pull him out of trouble tonight."
Klefbom gave the Oilers the lead at 7:44 of the second period.
McDavid fed the puck to the rearguard at the point and Klefbom hammered it glove side for the 2-1 edge.
Sharks Head Coach Peter DeBoer used his coach's challenge on the play, looking for it to be called back due to goaltender interference but the goal stood. Klefbom tallied his fifth of the season while McDavid and Aberg were awarded the assists.
Caggiula was called for a high-sticking double minor midway through the middle period and the Sharks struck just 18 seconds into the power play.

Couture ripped one short side from the wing to knot it up 2-2, registering his second point of the night and 28th goal of the campaign.
"Some of the penalties we took tonight I thought were a little bit careless," McLellan said of his team's discipline. The club ended the night 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Oilers started the third period by regaining the lead on a play very similar to Klefbom's second-period tally.
McDavid threw the puck up top, Klefbom fired a slap shot and Nugent-Hopkins tipped it past Jones just 1:26 into the frame. The goal was Nugent-Hopkins' 19th of the campaign while McDavid nabbed another helper - his second of the night.
But for the third time, the Sharks tied it up.
Dillon released a point shot through a maze of bodies at 9:05, scoring just his second goal of the season.
Neither side could net the winner in regulation, forcing overtime, where Hertl found twine off a one-timer at 2:40 of the extra period.
"This year, we're not finding ways to win games like this," said Klefbom. "We should have a lot of confidence when we're in the lead."
The Oilers hit the road for a four-game road trip beginning Saturday against the Florida Panthers.
