POST-GAME UPDATES
Inside the Oilers Blog
"It's really unfortunate that that's the way we come out to play after a loss last night," said Milan Lucic post-game. "We got to find some consistency in our game."
The Oilers scored twice in the third period, bringing them two goals from erasing the deficit but couldn't complete the comeback.
"It's frustrating," said Draisaitl, who is up to 59 points.
"We take two steps ahead, and then two steps back. one ahead, one back. Go up, go down... we got to figure it out."
Nino Niederreiter scored on the Canes' first shot of the game then once again at 11:02 of the opening period, as the Hurricanes stormed out to a commanding 3-1 lead in the first.
The newly acquired Hurricane - traded from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Victor Rask on Thursday - placed a wrist shot just above Talbot's right pad 28 seconds into the game to start the flurry.
The Hurricanes continued picking up wind as the period continued.
With Talbot out of position following a rebound, Andrei Svechnikov scored by redirecting a slap shot from the point before the Oilers netminder could recover.
Niederreiter's second as a Cane came after he won a puck battle behind the Oilers goal-line then slipped a shot 5-hole on Edmonton's keeper.
Talbot was pulled after the goal, bringing in Koskinen for the remainder of the match.
Edmonton registered their first shot on goal at 10:33 of the period, and was able to score before the end of the frame.
Manning potted his first in orange and blue by depositing a slot shot high blocker on Petr Mrazek to get Edmonton on the board.
All four first-period goals came at even strength, prompting Oilers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock to criticize his club's 5-on-5 performance.
"Our 5-on-5 play isn't good enough," he said. "We give up too many quality chances and too many pucks come back at us. We're not playing well 5-on-5 and it hurts us a lot."
Carolina didn't slow down in the second, scoring three more times in the period to double their lead.

Condensed Game: Hurricanes @ Oilers

Brock McGinn started it off with a wrist shot from between the circles, Lucas Wallmark beat Koskinen blocker side on the power play then Jordan Martinook notched his 10th of the season with a deft tip ahead of the crease.
Draisaitl achieved a milestone before the period closed, scoring career goal No. 100 on a one-timer with 18.8 ticks remaining in the frame. The Cologne, Germany's 100th tally came in just his 318th career outing.
The third period opened with a quick marker from Kassian, who deflected Matt Benning's point shot just 14 seconds in. Kassian - who dumped Martinook into the Oilers bench with a big hit earlier in the game - picked up his fifth goal of the campaign on the play, bringing Edmonton within three.
Draisaitl culled his third point of the night when he scored his second of the game on the power play. A rebound popped out to McDavid at the side of the net and rather than fire it right back at Mrazek, the Oilers Captain dished it to Draisaitl for the tap-in, putting Edmonton two goals away from the comeback.
"If we would have started like we played in the third, we would have given ourselves a chance to win but unfortunately, that wasn't the case," said Lucic.

THE OTHER SIDE | Coach Rod Brind'Amour Post-Game

Hitchcock pulled Koskinen with under three minutes to play remaining in the game, as the Oilers sought to complete the comeback but Wallmark added an empty netter for the 7-4 score instead.
The bench boss declared what changes he will be making ahead of Edmonton's next outing.
"We got two experienced defencemen and it's their turn to play; that's (Kevin) Gravel and (Alexander) Petrovic," Hitchcock said. "They got to play... That's number one.
"Number two, we have to get ourselves more organized in our transition game... our transition game is so slow right now and so deliberate that we just get covered over."
The Oilers will host the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday before breaking for the NHL All-Star Weekend then bye-week.
