EDMONTON, AB - William Lagesson is making his case to be a full-time NHL defenceman.
After playing all 69 of his games during the 2018-19 season with the AHL's Bakersfield Condors, the 24-year-old made his debut with the Oilers in 2019-20 and suited up for his first eight NHL games. The 91st-overall pick in 2014 also played 25 games with Bakersfield and scored three goals with seven assists.
Lagesson was part of Edmonton's playoff roster this past summer, but he didn't see any action during the Qualifying Round vs. Chicago. With only 33 games played last season, he was eager to compete in Sweden prior to the start of the 2020-21 NHL campaign and signed with HC Vita Hasten of the second division HockeyAllsvenskan.
The Gothenburg native is off to a strong start with the Norrkoping-based club, scoring three goals and four assists in nine games so far this season and playing on the team's top defence pairing.
"I feel ready to take that step and to be able to take a regular place," he told Hockeysverige, translated from Swedish, of his aspirations with the Oilers. "These are exciting times now and I'm on the border. It is important to be prepared, have self-confidence and have the little luck that you also need."
Lagesson was a pending restricted free agent heading into the off-season, and the Oilers made him a qualifying offer on Oct. 7, but a new contract has not yet been completed.
