United States wins World Junior Championship

MONTREAL -- Troy Terry scored in the fourth round of a shootout and Tyler Parsons stopped all five shots in the tiebreaker to give the United States a 5-4 victory against Canada in the gold medal game of the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship at Bell Centre on Thursday.
It was the second straight game Terry gave the U.S. a victory with his shootout heroics. He went 3-for-3 in a 4-3 victory against Russia in the semifinals on Wednesday.

"When [Terry] was set to go, we just told him to do his thing," U.S. captain Luke Kunin said.
The United States rallied from 2-0 and 4-2 deficits to win its fourth gold medal and first since a 3-1 win against Sweden at the 2013 WJC. It was also the third straight championship-round win by the U.S. against Canada. Canada last beat the U.S. 2-0 in the gold medal game at the 1997 WJC.
"This is one of the most resilient groups I've ever been a part of," U.S. defenseman Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins) said. "We got down and there was no panic. There wasn't any point in this game where we thought losing was an option.
"We're booed for 80 minutes, we're in a place that doesn't want us, and to come out on top it's that much sweeter."
Canada, which has reached the final a record 25 times, has won one gold medal in the past eight WJC.

"We kind of let them get back into the game too easily," Canada captain Dylan Strome said. "It's a tough feeling. It's frustrating having it end in a shootout but that's kind of the way it goes. The crowd was great. It was one of the coolest games I've ever played in."
Thomas Chabot (Ottawa Senators), Jeremy Lauzon (Boston Bruins), Nicolas Roy (Carolina Hurricanes) and Mathieu Joseph (Tampa Bay Lightning) scored and Carter Hart (Philadelphia Flyers) made 31 saves for Canada.
Kieffer Bellows (New York Islanders) scored twice, McAvoy and Colin White (Ottawa Senators) once and Parsons (Calgary Flames) made 46 saves for the United States.
"I'm proud of this group," said Bellows, who scored his first two goals of the tournament. "We bounced back from so much adversity this game. Parsons came up huge with five saves in the shootout. And Troy out there, making another shootout move and scoring. I mean, it's an unbelievable play by him."
When asked how this United States team should be remembered, McAvoy said: "World Champions. I mean, we'll be brothers, we'll be family forever. I mean, this win is unbelievable and there aren't really words right now, but we'll lean on each other for the rest of our lives. We're world champions."

Roy and Joseph scored in a span of 2:13 early in the third period to give Canada a 4-2 lead. Roy's goal at 1:52 was on the power play. Bellows scored his second of the game at 4:44 before White deflected in a shot from the left post at 7:07 for a 4-4 tie.
McAvoy and Bellows scored to pull the United States into a 2-2 tie in the second.
McAvoy scored off a wrist shot from between the circles with Kunin creating traffic in front of Hart at 3:04. The U.S. scored a power-play goal to tie when a shot from the point by defenseman Adam Fox (Calgary Flames) deflected off Bellows and past Hart at 9:30.
Canada took a 2-0 lead on goals by Chabot and Lauzon in the first.
"I just think it was a terrific heavyweight fight between two great hockey programs," U.S. coach Bob Motzko said. "It's really unfortunate there had to be a loser. We're awfully proud of our guys. That was a mountain of a comeback."
