NHL.com staff members pick All-Star Game teams

There is plenty of intrigue heading into the Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Player Draft.

Who will be the first player taken? Who will be last? Which goalie will go first? Will all four Toronto Maple Leafs end up on the same team, and what about the five Vancouver Canucks?

Those questions will be answered Thursday (6 p.m. ET; ESPN2, SN, TVAS), when team captains, assistant captains and celebrity captains Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly and Justin Bieber, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Tate McRae, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Will Arnett, and Jack and Quinn Hughes and Michael Bublé make their picks.

But NHL.com writers, editors and a few guests couldn't wait until Thursday to get a feel for how the player draft for the 2024 Honda (U.S.)/Rogers (Canada) All-Star Game on Feb. 3 (3 p.m. ET; ABC, ESPN+, SN, CBC, TVAS) will go.

NHL.com editors Shawn P. Roarke and Eric Marin picked for Team Matthews; NHL.com Editor-in-Chief Bill Price and NHL Power Player Liam Caven picked for Team MacKinnon; NHL.com staff writer David Satriano and former NHL goalie and current NHL Network analyst Cory Schneider picked for Team McDavid; and NHL.com "Fantasy On Ice Podcast" hosts Pete Jensen and Anna Dua picked for Team Hughes.

Roarke and Marin had the first pick, Price and Caven the second pick, Satriano and Schneider the third pick and Jensen and Dua the fourth pick.

Each set of captains selected nine players (seven skaters, two goalies) in a snake draft format to complete the 11-player rosters.

Note: This draft occurred before injured Jack Hughes was replaced on the All-Star roster by New Jersey Devils teammate Jesper Bratt, and as a co-captain for team Hughes by Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson.

Here is each roster, in order of selection:

Team Matthews (blue jerseys)
(Shawn P. Roarke, Eric Marin)
Auston Matthews, F, Toronto Maple Leafs (captain)
Morgan Rielly, D, Toronto Maple Leafs (assistant captain)
Justin Bieber (celebrity captain)
William Nylander, F, Toronto Maple Leafs (1st round)
Elias Pettersson, F, Vancouver Canucks (2nd round)
Filip Forsberg, F, Nashville Predators (3rd round)
Clayton Keller, F, Arizona Coyotes (4th round)
Kyle Connor, F, Winnipeg Jets (5th round)
Jake Oettinger, G, Dallas Stars (6th round)
Sergei Bobrovsky, G, Florida Panthers (7th round)
Tomas Hertl, F, San Jose Sharks (8th round)
Robert Thomas, F, St. Louis Blues (9th round)

Captains' analysis: We had to go with Nylander with the first pick. As Bill Price so eloquently put it, we were Captain Obvious and Co-Captain Obvious. Not only were we keeping the Maple Leafs family together (sorry, Mitch Marner), but Nylander is one of the most skilled players available. Speaking of skilled players, let's talk about the next two guys on the list: Pettersson and Forsberg. Yowza, that's some serious offensive talent there. So far, we have a Maple Leafs contingent and a Swedish contingent, so why not an Arizona contingent? Hence the selection of Keller of the Coyotes, a player Matthews skates with each offseason. Connor may be an injury replacement this time around, but it's only because he was injured for much of the season. He is an elite goal-scorer and an All-Star. Goalies are important in this game obviously, and we believe we got the best one-two punch in Oettinger and Bobrovsky. We saw what each did in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Hertl and Thomas as our final two picks; Are you kidding? We are absolutely loaded; this team is a wagon! Team Blue was already the fan favorite because of the hometown connection, but there's no question Team Blue is also now the team to beat on Saturday. -- Roarke and Marin

Team MacKinnon (yellow jerseys)
(Bill Price, Liam Caven)
Nathan MacKinnon, F, Colorado Avalanche (captain)
Cale Makar, D, Colorado Avalanche (assistant captain)
Tate McRae (celebrity captain)
Sidney Crosby, F, Pittsburgh Penguins (1st round)
Mitchell Marner, F, Toronto Maple Leafs (2nd round)
Igor Shesterkin, G, New York Rangers (3rd round)
Rasmus Dahlin, D, Buffalo Sabres (4th round)
Kirill Kaprizov, F, Minnesota Wild (5th round)
Vincent Trocheck, F, New York Rangers (6th round)
Nick Suzuki, F, Montreal Canadiens (7th round)
Frank Vatrano, F, Anaheim Ducks (8th round)
Alexandar Georgiev, G, Colorado Avalanche (9th round)

Captains' analysis: It was a no-brainer to take Crosby with our first pick (we know, Captain Obvious). Not only is he one of the greatest players in NHL history, he, like MacKinnon, is from Nova Scotia, so this was a natural match. We took Marner with our next pick just to break up the Maple Leafs reunion with Team Matthews, and then grabbed Shesterkin to give us one of the best goalies available. To cap off our first four picks, we took Dahlin to make us the only team with two defensemen. And then we rounded out our top five with the explosive Kaprizov, who should thrive in the 3-on-3 format. Trochek, whose face-off prowess will help us keep possession in this event, was a steal in the sixth round, and then we beefed up our scoring with Suzuki and Vatrano. Then, we added a third member of the Avalanche with Alexandar Georgiev. Let's face it, our team is stacked, with two-way talent up and down the roster, two legends in MacKinnon and Crosby, two incredible goalies and two of the best offensive defensemen in the NHL. -- Price and Caven

Team McDavid (white jerseys)
(David Satriano, Cory Schneider)
Connor McDavid, F, Edmonton Oilers (captain)
Leon Draisaitl, F, Edmonton Oilers (assistant captain)
Will Arnett (celebrity captain)
David Pastrnak, F, Boston Bruins (1st round)
Thatcher Demko, G, Vancouver Canucks (2nd round)
Sam Reinhart, F, Florida Panthers (3rd round)
Mathew Barzal, F, New York Islanders (4th round)
Alex DeBrincat, F, Detroit Red Wings (5th round)
Travis Konecny, F, Philadelphia Flyers (6th round)
Tom Wilson, F, Washington Capitals (7th round)
Cam Talbot, G, Los Angeles Kings (8th round)
Boone Jenner, F, Columbus Blue Jackets (9th round)

Captains' analysis: With Nylander and Crosby selected, it was a toss-up between Pastrnak and Kucherov. We opted for Pastrnak, giving us three of the top four goal-scorers in the NHL over the past five seasons. Then, we decided to shake things up and take the first goalie off the board in Demko, who is among the leaders in wins, goals-against average and save percentage. With our next picks, we took Reinhart, who is having a career year and second in the NHL in goals this season, and Barzal, who can distribute the puck. Then it was DeBrincat, McDavid's former junior teammate with Erie in the Ontario Hockey League, and Konecny. With the last three picks, we added some sandpaper in Wilson and Jenner, and took our second goalie in Talbot to form the most well-rounded team of the draft. -- Satriano and Schneider

Team Hughes (red jerseys)
(Pete Jensen, Anna Dua)
Jack Hughes, F, New Jersey Devils (captain)
Quinn Hughes, D, Vancouver Canucks (co-captain)
Michael Bublé (celebrity captain)
Nikita Kucherov, F, Tampa Bay Lightning (1st round)
Brady Tkachuk, F, Ottawa Senators (2nd round)
Connor Hellebuyck, G, Winnipeg Jets (3rd round)
J.T. Miller, F, Vancouver Canucks (4th round)
Sebastian Aho, F, Carolina Hurricanes (5th round)
Brock Boeser, F, Vancouver Canucks (6th round)
Elias Lindholm, F, Calgary Flames (7th round)
Jeremy Swayman, G, Boston Bruins (8th round)
Oliver Bjorkstrand, F, Seattle Kraken (9th round)

Captains' analysis: We went with the best player available in our opinion at No. 4 by taking Kucherov. Then, we selected Quinn's former teammate from the United States National Team Development Program and a fellow top 10 pick from the 2018 NHL Draft in power forward Brady Tkachuk. We then drafted an elite tandem of U.S.-born goalies in Hellebuyck and Swayman. We also didn't miss the chance to grab two of Quinn's Canucks teammates in Miller and Boeser. And then we made sure to land another elite center from the Metropolitan Division in Aho of the Hurricanes. We love the upside of having Lindholm based on his two-way game, and, last but not least, we were lucky to grab Bjorkstrand with the final pick. Bjorkstrand is the third Denmark-born player to appear in an NHL All-Star Game, joining forward Frans Nielsen (2017) and goalie Frederik Andersen (2020, 2022). -- Jensen and Dua
