TBL@COL: Kucherov scores on breakaway in overtime

DENVER -- The Tampa Bay Lightning won their 11th straight game when Nikita Kucherov scored on a breakaway at 3:03 of overtime for a 4-3 victory against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center on Monday.

It's the longest winning streak for the Lightning (40-15-5) in their history. They are one point behind the Boston Bruins for the Eastern Conference lead.
"If you're fluking your way to 11 straight, it's not a recipe for success," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "These 11, for the most part, it hasn't all been perfect, but it's been pretty darn good. We don't leave games saying, 'Holy cow, how did we get that one?' For the most part we're leaving games saying, 'You know what? We did deserve that.'"

Steven Stamkos, Cameron Gaunce and Alex Killorn scored, and Curtis McElhinney made 24 saves for the Lightning.
Kucherov has 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in his past 14 games.
"I don't think we played well today, but we still got a win," said Kucherov, who outraced Nathan MacKinnon to the net and shot between Avalanche goalie Pavel Francouz's pads. "We have to improve a lot in our game because we have a lot of good teams ahead of us. I don't think we had a good effort today."

MacKinnon had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche (33-18-7), who lost forward Mikko Rantanen to an upper-body injury after he was tripped by Lightning defenseman Erik Cernak and crashed into the boards at 7:18 of the second period. Cernak received a minor penalty.
Valeri Nichushkin tied it 3-3 for Colorado when he redirected Cale Makar's shot with 7:17 remaining in the third period. Francouz made 23 saves for the Avalanche, who are 0-2-1 in their past three games.
Colorado coach Jared Bednar said Rantanen will be out weeks. Rantanen, who has 41 points (19 goals, 22 assists) in 42 games, appeared to be holding his left shoulder while leaving the ice.

The Avalanche were already without goalie Philipp Grubauer, center Nazem Kadri and forwards Colin Wilson and Matt Calvert; each has a lower-body injury.
"I think every team's going through it a little bit," Bednar said. "But you start racking them up with Grubauer, Kadri, Calvert, now Mikko, our other guys got to step up. It's a great opportunity.
"We have to find a way to carve out wins like we did early in the year. It's going to get tougher and tougher, but hopefully we can get those guys healthy and back to join our team as soon as possible and guys are going to get opportunities and callups, and [it's] more ice time for guys that have been here wanting more ice time. We'll see what they got."
Andre Burakovsky's power-play goal gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead at 4:49 of the first period.
The Lightning took a 2-1 lead in the second period on goals from Killorn and Gaunce 16 seconds apart. Ondrej Palat passed across to Killorn in the left slot for a shot into an open net at 4:54; Gaunce, playing his second game this season, shot from the left point at 5:10 for his first goal.
"It means a lot," said Gaunce, who played in place of injured defenseman Braydon Coburn (undisclosed). "In the moment, you can't grasp the significance of it. As my career has gone on, I've taken notice of the things that have gone on, live in the moment. Something like that, I'm really proud of it."
Stamkos scored on a rebound of Brayden Point's shot to make it 3-1 at 13:43.
MacKinnon made it 3-2 at 18:26 when he skated into the slot and shot stick side after taking a drop pass from Gabriel Landeskog.

They said it

"Pretty cool, I guess. It's pretty surreal this run we've been on the last couple of months. This 11-game run has been a lot of fun. It's special. It seems like we're going about our business and it's not really so much about the streak." -- Lightning goalie Curtis McElhinney
"Their best player gets a breakaway and I wasn't able to stop it. Their best player (Kucherov) gets the puck on the blue line, he was racing with Nathan. He kind of opened me up a little bit and he shot it 5-hole. I thought I had it for a while, but unfortunately it just went in and got stuck in the net." -- Avalanche goalie Pavel Francouz
