Klingberg, who hasn't played since Nov. 8 (12 games) because of hand surgery, may be ready to play when the Stars host the New York Islanders on Dec. 23, or at the Nashville Predators on Dec. 27 at the latest, Montgomery said.
At the time of his injury, Dallas said Klingberg would be out at least four weeks.
Klingberg leads Stars defensemen with 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 16 games this season, and leads the team in average ice time at 25:03. He had an NHL career-high 67 points (eight goals, 59 assists) in 82 games last season.
Selected by Dallas in the fifth round (No. 131) in the 2010 NHL Draft, Klingberg has 227 points (47 goals, 180 assists) in 319 NHL games.
Center Martin Hanzal, who had spinal fusion surgery in March, has been cleared to play and could make his season debut when the Stars host the San Jose Sharks on Friday (8 p.m. ET; SNE, SNP, TVAS, FS-SW, NBCSCA, NHL.TV).
Hanzal, the No. 17 pick in the 2005 NHL Draft, has 336 points (126 goals, 210 assists) in 666 games over 11 NHL seasons with the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, Minnesota Wild and Stars.
