Semyon Varlamov to miss two weeks for Avalanche

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov will be out at least two weeks because of a groin injury.
"We're going to shut [Varlamov] down until after the All-Star break (Jan. 27-30)," coach Jared Bednar told the Avalanche website Wednesday. "This is no longer a day-to-day thing."

Varlamov was injured during a 6-4 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday, when he allowed five goals on 26 shots. He is 6-17-0 with a 3.38 goals-against average and .898 save percentage in 24 games.
He has missed 10 games because of injury this season, including nine games because of a groin injury (three games from Dec. 14-18 and six games from Dec. 23-Jan. 4).
"This has been an ongoing problem for [Varlamov], I think, over the last couple years," Bednar said. "He's had a couple of these groin pulls this year, multiple now."
Goaltender Calvin Pickard will be the starter in Varlamov's absence. Pickard is 7-11-1 with a 3.06 GAA and .902 save percentage in 21 games.
The Avalanche recalled goaltender Spencer Martin from San Antonio of the American Hockey League.
