Sharks get past Flames in OT

CALGARY-- Joe Pavelski scored 19 seconds into overtime and Martin Jones made a career-high 47 saves to help the San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday.
Brent Burns scored for the Sharks (36-23-6), who have won three of their past four games and are 18-5-4 since Jan. 9. San Jose entered action Monday in third in the Pacific Division, four points back of the second-place Los Angeles Kings, and six behind the division-leading Anaheim Ducks.
"Right now you've got to keep pace with everybody," Pavelski said. "Everybody's playing good. We understand our game's got to improve over the last week, week and a half. It can get better."

Joe Colborne scored and Joni Orito made 21 saves for the Flames (27-34-5). Calgary has lost eight of its past nine games and has two wins in the past 13 games.

"I'm very proud of our team," Flames coach Bob Hartley said. "We can count on those guys to go out, game in, game out, we're a young team and sometimes it doesn't always go our way, but the one thing that we have to respect from our team is the effort. The commitment to leave everything on the ice, to play with energy, to play with passion and we're getting this and that's step one in the right direction."
Burns cut to the net and fed a quick pass in front to Pavelski, who tapped the puck between Ortio's legs and over the goal line for his NHL-leading ninth game-winner.
"Entering the zone, I just tried to get through the D and [Joe Thornton] and [Burns] made a cross," said Pavelski, who has 30 goals for the third consecutive season and fourth time in his career. "[Burns] had some good speed. I saw he was getting by his guy. I was hoping he saw me out in front."
Colborne forced overtime with 1:22 remaining in the third period on Calgary's 48th shot of the game. On the Flames' sixth power play of the game and Ortio on the bench for the extra attacker, Mark Giordano knocked down a clearing attempt and sent a shot that Colborne tipped by Jones to tie the game 1-1.

"We kept coming back to the bench and saying, 'One's got to go in, one's got to go in,'" Colborne said. "And sure enough, we got one. And then Thornton, Burns and Pavelski go out and showed why they're all-world players. It's frustrating, but that was one of the better 60-minute games that we've played."
Jones stopped the previous 17 shots in the period. He denied Garnet Hathaway from the bottom of the circle at 12:43 and Johnny Gaudreau's deflection of Giordano's point shot at 15:19. He turned aside Gaudreau again with a sprawling stop with 2:19 remaining, his 47th save of the game.
"I'm feeling OK," Jones said. "I'll probably be a little tired later."
Burns, the NHL's Third Star of the Week, scored on San Jose's second shot 1:56 into the game, retrieving his own rebound at the point and snapping a shot through traffic and by a screened Ortio to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead.

Burns, who leads all NHL defensemen with 24 goals, has scored in four straight games. He's the first defenseman to score more than 23 goals in a season since Mike Green scored 31 with the Washington Capitals in 2008-09.
"We're creatures of routine, I think," Burns said. "We do the same thing every night. I think I went 19 games without a goal. You just kind of ride that roller coaster. The guys have been playing well. They've been making good plays and a lot of times I've been the recipient of a lot of good plays."
With the Flames on the power play, Jones made back-to-back saves off Sean Monahan's initial shot from the point, and the rebound off Dougie Hamilton, two of 12 saves to keep the game scoreless through the first.
"He was on," Pavelski said of Jones. "He was reading all the plays. You could see him anticipating everything. It was just one of those performances. It was great. We've been on the other side. It's tough sometimes. It was great to see. We're happy for him."

Jones made 18 saves in the second.
He stopped Brandon Bollig, and consecutive shots from Matt Stajan in a 14-second span three minutes into the second period, and sprawled to make a blocker save on Gaudreau's one-timer at 9:37 with Calgary on the power play.
Jones denied Colborne's tip, and dove to save Monahan's rebound attempt with the Sharks shorthanded with just over a minute remaining in the period.
"He was unbelievable; huge save after huge save and he was there for the routine ones," Burns said. "He's been playing amazing. He's so poised. That's huge for confidence."
