Former Columbus Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards will interview with the Detroit Red Wings to discuss becoming an assistant to coach Jeff Blashill, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

The Blue Jackets granted the Red Wings permission to interview Richards, who was fired as Columbus coach on Oct. 22, 2015, following an 0-7-0 start. Richards signed a multiyear contract extension with the Blue Jackets on May 27, 2014.

Richards will meet with the Red Wings after he returns from Russia, where he's an assistant coach for the United States at the 2016 IIHF World Championship. The tournament concludes May 22.

Richards, 49, was 127-112-21 with the Blue Jackets and led them to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2014. He is in 204-183-37 in six-plus seasons coaching the Minnesota Wild and Columbus.
