Anaheim dropped their second straight to start the preseason, their first at home, in a 5-1 defeat to the Arizona Coyotes. The Ducks iced a lineup of mostly youngsters, with the exception of defensemen Cam Fowler and Kevin Bieksa, and forwards Corey Perry, Andrew Cogliano and Antoine Vermette.
After falling 5-0 in their preseason opener last night in San Jose, the Ducks got off to an inauspicious start in this one. Just 24 seconds after the opening faceoff, Arizona's Christian Fischer punched in a bouncing puck to make it 1-0 Coyotes.
Less than three minutes later, the Ducks tied it up when 2016 first-round draftee Max Jones swept in a rebound off a Fowler shot.
Anaheim appeared to take the lead on a Kalle Kossila goal off a bad turnover by goalie Louis Domingue, but officials on the ice ruled the shot went off the post. In-arena replays clearly showed the goal going in just under the crossbar, but replay review is not available in the preseason, as was announced by the referee to a disappointed crowd.
Arizona scored three unanswered in the second, the first from Clayton Keller on a feed from former Duck Emerson Etem. Then Fischer converted on a breakaway with just over five minute left to make it 3-1. With 2:28 left in the period, a turnover led to an easy 2-on-none for Arizona in which Max Domi deposited a pass from Keller for a three-goal lead.
It wasn't an easy game to watch overall, with a combined 14 penalties between the two teams.
The Coyotes topped it off with 1:22 left in the game when Keller scored his second of the game off a Domi feed.
Several Ducks not playing in tonight's game welcome fans back to Honda Center by lending a hand with ticket scanning, concessions, 50/50 raffle sales and more. Several of those players will likely be in the lineup when the Ducks take on the LA Kings at 7 p.m.
