Colorado Avalanche defenseman Nikita Zadorov reported to training camp Thursday after getting his immigration papers finalized, underwent medical and physical testing, and will practice for the first time Friday.
The Russia-born Zadorov, 22, who was a restricted free agent, signed a two-year contract reportedly worth $4.3 million last Friday.
"I finally saw all the guys," he said at Pepsi Center, where the Avalanche play the Dallas Stars Thursday in a preseason game. "They were happy to see me, I was happy to see them. Now [it's] back to work and I'm real happy to be here."
Center Matt Duchene will make his preseason debut. He's expected to play on a line with left wing Alex Kerfoot and right wing Nail Yakupov.
Zadorov (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) will be on the Avalanche's top defense pair with Erik Johnson. Zadorov had 10 assists, 73 penalty minutes and a team-leading 153 hits in 56 games last season. He missed the final 25 games after breaking his ankle in practice.
"At our exit meeting last year [general manager Joe Sakic] told us we're probably going to play together this year, so we're excited," Zadorov said. "[Johnson's] been texting me every day, he wants me to be here and was happy I came today. I'm real excited to play with him, he's a great player."
Zadorov said he's been skating and working out since mid-August and doesn't think it will take long for him to be in game shape.
"I've got a few preseason games left, right?" he said. "I'm going to play some of them and hopefully I get my level back right away. I was skating and I was like, 'Let's get the season going already.' I'm ready and I don't think it's going to be any problem to come back to the same level."
