TORONTO-- Travis Dermott and Justin Holl each scored his first NHL goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 5-0 win against the New York Islanders at Air Canada Centre on Wednesday.

"Good for those kids. You don't get to score your first NHL goal very often, one time," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "It's great if your dad's here (like Travis' was) to see it. Between periods I saw a few tears, which was nice to see as well. It's not just an individual accomplishment; it's a family accomplishment, so they should be proud."

Frederik Andersen made 28 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, and Kasperi Kapanen, Auston Matthews and Mitchell Marner scored for the Maple Leafs (29-18-5), who have won three in a row.
Thomas Greiss made 45 saves for the Islanders (25-22-5), who are 1-2-1 in their past four games, including a 4-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday.
"We worked and we didn't succeed," Islanders coach Doug Weight said. "They had a lot more jump than we did. If anyone knows how important it is, it's the guys in that room. This wasn't an effort that was lax or lazy, it wasn't. It's just disappointing. It's tough."

Dermott made it 4-0 when he stole the puck at the blue line and then went to the net to redirect a pass from William Nylander at 18:59 of the second period. The 21-year-old defenseman played his ninth NHL game.
"I always thought growing up, it would probably be some rebound or go off someone's shin pad, certainly no highlight-reel goal," Dermott said. "It was set up perfectly and Willy gave me a perfect pass. There was nothing I could do but miss the net, and luckily enough I put it in."
Holl scored 3:42 into the third period of his NHL debut to make it 5-0. The 26-year-old defenseman carried the puck into the Islanders zone and shot between Greiss' pads.
"It's almost surreal, it just happens, and then I was like, 'Wait, did that really just happen?' and then you're like, 'Nice, it did,'" Holl said. "So that was nice, and it was a big win, it was nice to contribute."
Holl was recalled from Toronto of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis after defensemen Ron Hainsey and Roman Polak came down with an illness. Holl did not find out he was playing until three hours before game time.

"There's anxiousness to get going because once you start the game, it's just another game and you settle in, but definitely the first two shifts, you're trying to feel it out and make sure you don't do anything too stupid and get in the groove," Holl said.
Kapanen gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at 5:37 of the first period when he jammed a loose puck that had hit the post. It went in off Islanders forward Mathew Barzal, who was minus-4.
The Maple Leafs made it 2-0 when Matthews scored at 13:39. Greiss poke-checked the puck away from Zach Hyman on a breakaway, but Matthews put the rebound past Greiss' glove. Jake Gardiner had an assist to extend his point streak to an NHL career-high six games (10 assists).
Marner deflected a pass from Nazem Kadri in the slot at 10:32 of the second period to make it 3-0. Kadri has five points (three goals, two assists) in his past five games after one goal in his previous 18 games.

They said it

"The way we've played the last few nights isn't even close to where we need to be to get where we want to get to. We have a great group in here. It's hard to be at a certain standard every night, especially in this league with how tight and competitive it is. We have to be better." -- Islanders captain John Tavares
"It's crazy having him here and being able to point up to him at the end of the game and let him know that one was for him." -- Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott on scoring his first NHL goal with his dad, Jim, at the game
