NEW YORK - Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for interference against Florida Panthers forward Eric Staal during NHL Game No. 720 in Montreal on Thursday, Jan. 19, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 18:14 of the first period.
The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
