Jakub Voracek scored for the Flyers (14-12-7), who went 1-for-6 on the power play, including 0-for-3 in the third period.
The Kings are No. 1 in the NHL on the penalty kill (86.5 percent) but have allowed a power-play goal in six straight games.
"Special teams can generate momentum in a hockey game and penalty kill is a really big part of that," said Martinez, who played 4:11 shorthanded, second among Kings defensemen behind Drew Doughty (5:09). "That's something we've used this year, and I think past four or five games we've been giving up some [power-play] goals, and we weren't happy with it."
The Flyers scored on the power play when Claude Giroux's shot deflected off Doughty and went to Voracek, who one-timed a shot from a sharp angle past Quick with 1:56 remaining in the first period to cut the Kings lead to 2-1.

Los Angeles allowed six shots on Philadelphia's first two power plays of the third period, but the average shot length was 47.8 feet. The third penalty was taken with 6.5 seconds remaining.
"[Penalty kill] starts with your goalie, and our goalies have been terrific all year," Kings coach John Stevens said. "Guys have been together a long time, they pressure the puck, they read off the puck really well. We've got some really quality guys that have done a good job in the face-off circle. When we're really on, we can limit the time in the zone because we can deny entries, put pucks on the wall.
"We have lots of guys … we're one of the few teams that uses seven or eight forwards to kill penalties, so as long as we're getting clears and winning face-offs, we usually have fresh guys on the ice, which I think helps us."
The Kings played the second and third periods with five defensemen after Christian Folin sustained an upper-body injury in the first. Stevens said Folin will be re-evaluated when they return to Los Angeles.
The Flyers said they felt they generated enough offensive opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net.
"It was a tight game," Voracek said. "They didn't make any mistakes. … We had a few looks, in the second period especially, but we couldn't score on the power play. I think the power play lost the game."
Martinez gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at 5:27 of the first period. Torrey Mitchell won a face-off on the left side of the Flyers zone back to Martinez, whose one-timer from above the right face-off circle went off Flyers forward Taylor Leier and over goalie Brian Elliott's right shoulder.
Lewis made it 2-0 with a wrist shot from the right side at 16:46 of the first that got past Elliott's glove.

Kempe made it 3-1 at 4:48 of the third when he exited the penalty box, took a drop pass from Dustin Brown and beat Elliott past his glove with a wrist shot from the right circle.
Toffoli made it 4-1 with 4:29 remaining. Nicholas Shore set up the play when he stole the puck from Flyers center Sean Couturier.

They said it

"It's nice to be where my kids grew up, it's home for them, [but] this was a big game for us on this trip. We really wanted to take two points home for us, so it's just a nice win against a quality hockey team." -- Kings coach John Stevens, who coached the Flyers from 2006-09
"We created opportunities to win the game. Maybe it would have had to have been 2-1 in overtime, maybe it would have had to be in a shootout. That's the type of game that it probably needed to be tonight." -- Flyers coach Dave Hakstol

Need to know

Toffoli's goal was his 100th in the NHL and his 200th point in the League. … The Kings had an apparent goal by Doughty at 6:49 of the third overturned after Hakstol challenged that Brown interfered with Elliott. … Voracek's goal was his first in 11 games. … Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere missed most of the second period but came back in the third. ... Giroux did not play the final 4:43 after Kempe pushed him from behind, causing the Flyers captain to fall to the ice and slide into Brown, who landed on him near the Kings bench.
