GAME STORY: Flyers 2, Oilers 1

PHILADELPHIA, PA -In a tight game, Wayne Simmonds' third-period tally proved to be the difference as the Oilers dropped a 2-1 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers.
"That was a pretty evenly played game," said Head Coach Todd McLellan. "Both teams checked pretty hard I thought and there wasn't a lot of free ice to get creative. I thought we were a little bit slow out of the gate and then kind of found our legs as we got going. We made one more mistake than they did and they got one on the power play and we didn't… That's probably the difference in the night."

The teams finished the game with 24 shots each.
"It was definitely tricky (to get the offence going)," said Oilers forward Kailer Yamamoto. "They played a solid defensive game so it was definitely tough to get shots on them."
It was also a physical game, with the Oilers leading the way in hits with 31. Defenceman Matt Benning missed the last two games with an illness but had five hits in his return.
The Flyers got the scoring started early with a power-play goal at 3:36 of the opening period. Shayne Gostisbehere shot the puck inside and it kicked out to an awaiting Claude Giroux. The goal was the veteran forward's fifth goal of the season.
A former Flyers draft pick got the equalizer for Edmonton. Pat Maroon got the puck in the corner, stick-handled out with defenders on him. He shot the puck and scored past Brian Elliott for his second of the season at 15:37 of the middle frame. The goal made it a 1-1 game.
Maroon was taken in the sixth round by Philadelphia, 161st overall in the 2007 NHL Draft. He scored his first goal in an Oilers uniform in Philadelphia on March 3, 2016. Saturday's hard-working goal gives the winger a two-game scoring streak.
The home team responded at 17:45 of the third. Simmonds came flying off the bench and was set up by Valtteri Filppula for the game-winner.
"It sucks because we fought all game, we played hard all game," said Maroon. "The last two periods I thought we did good things. A mental breakdown leads to a goal and it hurts. That stings a little bit."
The Oilers (2-5-0) take on the Penguins in Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
