Larkin, who has been the Red Wings captain since Jan. 13, 2021, has five years remaining on the eight-year, $69.9 million contract he signed with Detroit on March 1, 2023.
"Dylan is under contract as a member of the Detroit Red Wings," the team said in a statement. "Any conversations regarding his future with the club will take place privately when a new hockey operations leader has been named. As such, we will not comment any further on this matter. We look forward to seeing Dylan and the rest of his teammates at Little Caesars Arena for the start of training camp as we prepare for the upcoming season."
The statement also said that the team would begin the season without a captain and the situation would be revisited once new hockey operations leadership was in place.
Larkin, who grew up in Michigan, was the No. 15 pick by Detroit in the 2014 NHL Draft. He has 643 points (276 goals, 367 assists) in 808 games for them, 10th in their 100-year history.
However, Larkin has yet to play in a Stanley Cup Playoff game in his 11 NHL seasons.
A gold medalist with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Larkin scored an NHL career-high 34 goals, second on Detroit behind Alex DeBrincat (41), and had 67 points in 74 games. The Red Wings (41-31-10) still missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 10th consecutive season after a team-record 25 straight appearances.
On Jan. 25, the Red Wings were 32-16-5 and tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for the best record in the East. They finished the season 9-15-5 including 5-7-2 in March, during which Larkin missed seven games (March 8-21) with a lower-body injury, continuing a troubling trend that saw them go 5-9-1 in March 2023, 3-9-2 in 2024 and 4-10-0 last season.
Detroit was ninth on the power play (23.2 percent) and 18th on the penalty kill at the end of February. The following month, they were 25th on the man-advantage (18.2 percent) and 29th on the kill (71.4 percent).
The Red Wings open the regular season against the New York Rangers on Oct. 2.
