Red Wings team scope

The Detroit Red Wings ended a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 shootout victory at the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. Coach Jeff Blashill had Dylan Larkin centering Thomas Vanek and Gustav Nyquist; the line combined for one goal, two points and four shots on goal; Larkin finished 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) on faceoffs. "I thought they were good, they scored the goal and I thought [Larkin] showed good accountability with his 200-foot game," Blashill said. "I thought he was able to use his speed. I think [Nyquist and Vanek] have been excellent together, so it was good combination for us." Jimmy Howard start for the eighth time in the past nine games. "[Howard] has done a good job dating back to this summer when he put the work in after not having the year he wanted [in 2015-16]," Blashill said. "He said 'I'm going to go to work' and he went to work. I think he put himself in a position to be successful and now he goes out and has confidence that's earned through the work he's put in." Howard is 5-5-0 this season despite a 1.76 goals-against average and .943 save percentage. He is 3-2-1 in seven games against the New Jersey Devils with a 2.55 GAA and .892 save percentage.

Devils team scope

Right wing Kyle Palmieri is expected to return to the lineup after missing the past two games with an upper-body injury. Palmierihas two goals and six points in his past five games against the Red Wings. Coach John Hynes said he will determine who Palmieri replaces in the lineup during pregame warmups. The Devils are 7-0-1 at home this season; the last time New Jersey went undefeated at home in regulation through the first nine games was 1987-88 (8-0-1). The Devils remain the only NHL team without a regulation loss at home this season. "You always want to try and make your home rink a tough one to play in and make sure teams know it's going to be a tough one coming in," Palmieri said. "We've done a good job of that so far this year and we'd like to keep that going." The Devils ended a three-game losing streak with a 5-4 shootout win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday. Left wing Michael Cammalleri returned to the lineup after missing six games for personal reasons and had his first four-point game (one goal, three assists) since Feb. 13, 2013. Defenseman Kyle Quincey spent parts of eight seasons with the Red Wings (2005-08, 2012-16). He was a fourth-round pick (No. 132) by Detroit in the 2003 NHL Draft. The Devils are 1-for-32 on the power play in the past 10 games.

Status report

Blashill will play Tatar with Zetterberg and Mantha on the second line and have Abdelkader with Nielsen and Glendening on the third line to start the game. ... Hall skated on his own, handling pucks and moving through cones, prior to the morning skate on Friday. He has missed the past five games after having surgery on his left knee and is expected to miss another 2-3 weeks. "He's making some progress, and is a little bit ahead of schedule so everything went well with the surgery and his recovery has been good," Hynes said. "He's incredibly fit and really takes care of himself and looks like he's on his way back in a good way." Schneider will make his 16th start of the season; Kinkaid will start at the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
