Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round (No. 48) of the 2011 NHL Draft, Ouellet spent three seasons from 2013-16 split between Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League and the Red Wings prior to making Detroit's roster for good to start the 2016-17 season.
He played four games with the Red Wings in 2013-14, including his NHL debut Oct. 21, but didn't have a point. That came in his fifth game of the 2014-15 season during a 5-4 shootout win against the New Jersey Devils.

In 2016-17, Ouellet had 12 points in 66 games and was signed to a two-year contract after the season. However, he had no goals and seven assists in 37 games and was a healthy scratch for 45 games in 2017-18.
He signed with the Montreal Canadiens as a free agent July 1, 2018. He had three assists with the Canadiens in 19 games in 2018-19. He had seven goals and 21 assists in 47 games for Laval in the AHL.
