Fantasy picks: Robby Fabbri has sneaky value

Each day this season, NHL.com's fantasy staff will provide daily picks for DraftKings NHL contests. This list of targets includes expensive and value options at each position to help you build a winning roster.
C - Joe Thornton, SJS ($5,500)
Thornton, 37, is already in midseason form, having played in the World Cup of Hockey 2016 for champion Team Canada. He was a DFS lineup lock in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs on the Sharks' top line with Joe Pavelski and Tomas Hertl. He'll be on the first power-play unit yet again against a familiar opponent in the Los Angeles Kings; he has 72 points in 75 career regular-season games against them.

C - Kyle Turris, OTT ($4,800)
Turris' stock is low after an injury-plagued second half last season, but he'll be in a prime spot alongside Mike Hoffman, one of the League's most underrated even-strength point producers, in Ottawa's season opener. Turris, tied for 15th among centers in DraftKings price, had three points and 10 shots on goal in five preseason games, and faces a Toronto Maple Leafs defense that allowed 25 goals in eight preseason games.
W - Johnny Gaudreau, CGY ($6,900)
With Gaudreau's contract signed and sealed, it's time for "Johnny Hockey" to deliver. He faces an improved Edmonton Oilers defense in the Flames opener, but remains a logical stack with Sean Monahan and/or Kris Versteeg, who could round out that line after signing with Calgary on Tuesday. Gaudreau was tied for sixth in the League in scoring last season, and could find an ever higher gear after the Flames' offseason improvements.
W - Robby Fabbri, STL ($4,300)
Fabbri is expected to line up next to Paul Stastny and David Perron on the Blues' second line, and is going for an extremely low price in the opener on the road against the Chicago Blackhawks. It's a tough matchup without question, but one that presents against-the-grain upside. Fabbri had the second best points-per-60 average (3.13) among players with at least 20 games played last postseason behind Sharks center Logan Couture (3.88). Another attractive value pick on the wing is Maple Leafs rookie William Nylander ($4,400), who is expected to flank Auston Matthews in Toronto's opener.

D - Duncan Keith, CHI ($6,000)
Keith missed the World Cup is his recovery from knee surgery, but is ready to go for the Blackhawks opener against the Blues. Keith plays major minutes at even strength and on the power play, and offers affordable exposure to Patrick Kane. Keith had seven points and 29 SOG in nine games last season against the Blues in the regular season and playoffs combined.
D - Oscar Klefbom, EDM ($3,900)
Speaking of fantasy value by association, Klefbom could man the first power-play unit with Connor McDavid, Jordan Eberle and Co. for the high-scoring Oilers at home against the Flames. For a shade under $4,000, you could benefit from drafting an offensive defenseman who had three points and 16 SOG in five preseason games. He had 12 points in 30 games prior to injury last season.
G - Martin Jones, SJS ($8,000)
Jones defeated the Kings on opening night last season and returns home after a long postseason run where he won eight of 12 home games with a .932 save percentage and two shutouts. The Sharks offense has only gotten stronger after adding Mikkel Boedker, making Jones a safe goalie to spend up for on this four-game slate.
G - Brian Elliott, CGY ($7,500)
The Flames and Oilers projected goalie starters for Wednesday are going for the same cheap price. They are lower-end options, but Elliott has a chance to make an early statement on the road against an offense that many DFS owners will be loading up on. The Flames defense is underrated and their secondary scoring is stronger than ever with Troy Brouwer and prospect Matthew Tkachuk, so count on Elliott to at least get you the win bonus.
