Chris Kelly signs one-year contract with Senators

Forward Chris Kelly signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Ottawa Senators on Thursday, returning to where his NHL career began in 2003-04.
"We are excited to welcome Chris back to Ottawa," Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a statement. "We felt that we needed another player with the ability to succeed in close situations and on the penalty kill. Chris will be able to contribute to both of those while adding another accomplished leader to our group."

Kelly, 35, spent five-plus seasons with the Boston Bruins after he was acquired from the Senators in a trade for a second-round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft on Feb. 15, 2011. Kelly had 13 points in 25 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help Boston win the Stanley Cup.
Kelly scored two goals in 11 games last season before breaking his leg during a game against the Dallas Stars on Nov. 3. He missed the rest of the regular season.
"I started skating at the beginning of March, and from March through May, before I took a break," Kelly told the Ottawa Sun. "I was fully cleared (to return) in June and I was on the ice again [Wednesday] and back working out. Everything feels great."
A third-round pick (No. 94) of the Senators in the 1999 NHL Draft, Kelly had 75 goals in 463 games in six-plus seasons with Ottawa. He has 118 goals and 277 points in 751 NHL games.
"We're not signing Chris Kelly for what he did in the past, it's for what he can do for us in the future," Dorion told the Sun. "He can help us win right now."
