Vejmelka stops 23 of 24 in Coyotes' 4-1 win

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Nick Schmaltz scored for the fourth straight game and had an assist for the Arizona Coyotes in a 4-1 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Mullett Arena on Tuesday.

The Blackhawks (21-34-5) played shortly
after trading forward Patrick Kane
, the second-leading scorer in their history, to the New York Rangers in a three-team deal that included the Coyotes.
"Not feeling too great, but you've got to play through it," Chicago forward Philipp Kurashev said. "I think our execution just wasn't there. We didn't really play with a lot of emotion, and our compete wasn't there."
Karel Vejmelka made 23 saves and
Travis Boyd
, Barrett Hayton and Jack McBain scored for the Coyotes (21-30-9), who had lost two straight following a nine-game point streak (5-0-4). Clayton Keller had two assists.
"We found our game and I thought we were pretty good, we generated a lot [of offense] and we did a decent job of defending," Boyd said. "All in all, it was a pretty good win."

Alex Stalock made 29 saves for Chicago after missing 18 games since Jan. 14 with a head injury and vision problems. Andreas Athanasiou scored for the Blackhawks, who lost their second straight in as many days after winning five in a row.
"I thought we were just a little bit off, we didn't get the shot off or we didn't capitalize on our chances," coach Luke Richardson said. "It just seemed like we were one beat off. Not to use tired as an excuse, but the guys just looked tired a little bit."
The Kane trade came a day after the Blackhawks traded defenseman Jake McCabe and center Sam Lafferty to the Toronto Maple Leafs before a 4-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday.
"It's been a tough couple of days, not going to lie about that affecting us emotionally and psychologically," defenseman Connor Murphy said. "They all had such great seasons with us and they're impactful people for our [dressing] room and for our organization. We'll miss them and we'll try to regroup here with a new group of guys and build back up together."
Boyd's unassisted goal gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead at 10:07 of the first period. After defenseman Isaak Phillips turned the puck over in the neutral zone, Boyd cut wide toward the right face-off circle and his wrist shot went under defenseman Ian Mitchell's stick and Stalock's glove.
Hayton deflected Schmaltz's shot from the right point to make it 2-0 at 18:37. Hayton was tied up by defenseman Caleb Jones as he went to the net but managed to tip the puck between Stalock's pads.

McBain extended the lead to 3-0 at 15:32 of the second. Stalock stopped Troy Stecher's shot with his left skate, but Stecher retrieved the puck behind the net and fed it in front, where it deflected off McBain and in.
