Teuvo Teravainen scored two of the Carolina Hurricanes' four third-period goals in a 4-1 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Tuesday.

Carolina moved within one point of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
"It wasn't a great first two periods," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "We were just a little off. Coming out in the third and getting one right away kind of settled everyone down and we played a pretty good game."

Micheal Ferland had a goal and two assists, Justin Williams had a goal and an assist, and Curtis McElhinney made 25 saves for the Hurricanes (29-22-6), who went 4-1-0 on a five-game road trip.
Mark Stone scored for the Senators (21-30-5), and Anders Nilsson made 33 saves.
"I thought [Nilsson] did a good job getting us there and probably deserved better from us in the third," Senators forward Bobby Ryan said. "We came out with an objective in the third and clearly didn't meet it."
Stone gave the Senators a 1-0 lead when he batted in the rebound of Cody Ceci's shot from the right-side boards at 12:09 of the first period. It was his fourth goal in the past three games and extended his point streak to four games.
Carolina scored 16 seconds into the third period to tie the game 1-1 when Ferland redirected a slap pass from Dougie Hamilton.

"It's huge," Brind'Amour said. "It's hard when it's a struggle to find the net. Obviously getting that goal there set the group up, and we were able to get the two points."
Ottawa coach Guy Boucher didn't think Carolina's tying goal deflated his team.
"One of those fluky goals there, it gave them life. But at 1-1, it's fine," Boucher said. "But then penalties killed us, plain and simple. That's the game right there."
Williams made it 2-1 on a 5-on-3 power play when he scored from the slot on a feed from Ferland at 7:29.

"[Williams] had a perfect shot, bar down," Boucher said. "We weren't tight on it. We were spread out on that 5-on-3. We didn't play it well."
Nino Niederreiter fed Teravainen in the low slot for another power-play goal to make it 3-1 at 9:03.
"I'm trying to get him to shoot more because he does have a great shot, but he's an unselfish player and a play-making player, and that's what he looks to do first," Brind'Amour said. "Obviously a big goal for us."
Ferland set up Teravainen at 16:10 for the 4-1 final.

"Moving the puck, shooting the puck," Teravainen said, describing the Carolina power play. "[Williams] had a great shot. We made a nice, low play there, and I got a goal. Good plays."

They said it

"It's big. We're trying to scratch and claw and get ourselves in the [playoff] mix here. We don't ever really look in the past. It's nice that we're (4-1-0 on the road trip). We just won one game, and now that one is behind us and we're moving on trying to get that next one." -- Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour
"On a 5-on-3 the opponent is going to get a look, for sure. You need a bit of luck, so the puck ends up at the other end, and they have trouble coming in (the offensive zone), and you have a fumble here and there, and you need a save. It's a long 5-on-3 there." -- Senators coach Guy Boucher on Carolina's 1:34 two-man advantage
