Super 16: Panthers remain No. 1, Blues move up power rankings

The undefeated St. Louis Blues moved up seven spots to land at No. 3 in the NHL.com Super 16 power rankings.

The Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes, the two undefeated teams in the Eastern Conference, are atop the Super 16 for the second straight week.
The Calgary Flames, winners of four straight road games, are No. 9 after not being ranked last week. The New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets also got in this week.
To create the NHL.com power rankings, each of the 14 participating staff members put together his or her version of what they think it should look like. Those were submitted and a point total assigned to each.
The team that was selected first was given 16 points, second got 15, third 14 and so on down to No. 16, who got one point.
Here is the Super 16:
1. Florida Panthers (7-0-0)Total points: 219Last week: No. 1
The Panthers scored the first goal in each of their first five games before allowing the first goal in what became a 5-3 win against the Arizona Coyotes on Monday. They have won 13 straight regular-season games dating to last season.
2. Carolina Hurricanes (5-0-0)Total points: 212Last week: No. 2
The Hurricanes have tied their record for the longest season-opening winning streak (5-0-0 in 2019-20) and goalie Frederik Andersen is the first goalie in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers history to win each of his first five games with the team. Carolina has outscored opponents 22-8.
3. St. Louis Blues (5-0-0)Total points: 189Last week: No. 10
The Blues have allowed 11 goals in five games. They've given up six in the third period, all after they built at least a three-goal lead. They have scored first in two of their five games but have won each of them by at least two goals.

4. Washington Capitals (4-0-3)Total points: 170Last week: No. 5
Forward Alex Ovechkin is the only player in the NHL this season to score at 5-on-5, on the power play, shorthanded and into an empty net.
5. Edmonton Oilers (5-1-0)Total points: 167Last week: No. 4
The Oilers scored at least five goals in four straight games before a 5-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday. However, goalie Mike Smith is on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. He is 2-0-0 with a 3.08 goals-against average and .920 save percentage in three games.
6. Boston Bruins (3-2-0)Total points: 126Last week: No. 8
The Bruins won their first two home games, 3-1 against the Dallas Stars and 4-3 against the San Jose Sharks. They play four of their next five games and nine of their next 13 at home.
7. Minnesota Wild (5-1-0)Total points: 124Last week: No. 7
Cam Talbot has won five straight games to start the season for the first time in his nine NHL seasons. He can tie Manny Fernandez for the Wild's longest winning streak by a goalie to start the season if he wins his next start. Fernandez was 6-0-0 in 2002-03. Talbot has a 2.55 GAA and .906 save percentage.
8. Pittsburgh Penguins (3-1-2)Total points: 113Last week: No. 9

in the lineup. They are 34-16-8 without the likely Hockey Hall of Fame centers, including 3-1-2 this season. Crosby (wrist) could make his season debut against the Flames at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; TVAS, ATTSN-PT, SNW, ESPN+, NHL LIVE). Malkin (knee) is expected to be out for at least the first two months of the season.
9. Calgary Flames (4-1-1)Total points: 105Last week: NR
Andrew Mangiapane has scored six goals in a four-game goal-scoring streak, including two in each of his past two games, and seven goals in six games this season. The forward has scored 12 goals in his past 10 games dating to last season, which he ended on a four-game goal-scoring streak.

10. Tampa Bay Lightning (3-3-1)Total points: 101Last week: No. 3
The Lightning have three wins despite holding a lead in one of the games, their 5-1 victory against the Penguins on Tuesday. Their previous two wins came in overtime. They did not hold a lead in any of their four losses.
11. New York Islanders (3-2-1)Total points: 74Last week: No. 13
Goalie Ilya Sorokin has faced the most shots in the NHL (209) but has a .933 save percentage, with a shutout in consecutive starts. Goalie Semyon Varlamov (soreness) could also be activated off injured reserve before the Islanders visit the Nashville Predators on Saturday.
12. Colorado Avalanche (2-4-0)Total points: 49Last week: No. 6
Nathan MacKinnon has scored six points (two goals, four assists) in a four-game point scoring streak. The center did not play in Colorado's first two games of the season because he was in NHL COVID-19 protocol.
13. Buffalo Sabres (4-1-1)Total points: 48Last week: No. 14
The Sabres have outscored their opponents 13-5 after the first period, when they've been outscored 6-5 despite being plus-20 in shots on goal (72-52). They are 14-for-16 (87.5 percent) on the penalty kill.
14. New York Rangers (4-2-1)Total points: 43Last week: NR
The Rangers won four in a row on the road before returning home and losing 5-1 to the Calgary Flames on Monday. They were 13-for-13 on the penalty kill in road wins against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Predators and Ottawa Senators. But they are 3-for-26 (11.5 percent) with a shorthanded goal against on the power play this season.
15. Vegas Golden Knights (3-4-0)Total points: 41Last week: No. 11
The Golden Knights are 0-for-15 on the power play. They are the only team in the NHL without a power-play goal.

16. Winnipeg Jets (3-2-1)Total points: 40Last week: NR
The Jets have won three straight games without forwards Blake Wheeler and Mark Scheifele. Wheeler practiced Wednesday after he was removed from COVID-19 protocol, where he's been since Oct. 18, and Scheifele has been in protocol since Oct. 21. Winnipeg is 5-for-12 on the power play in their past four games after going 0-for-8 in their first two, each regulation losses.
