Super 16: Rangers take over first place

A new No. 1 team has emerged in the NHL.com weekly Super 16 power rankings for a fourth consecutive week.
The red-hot New York Rangers, whose 72 goals lead the League and are 16 more than any other team, took over the top spot this week. The Rangers were ranked first by five NHL.com staff members and no worse than third by 11 of the 12 who vote on the Super 16 every week.

The Rangers knocked the Pittsburgh Penguins out of the top spot.
The rankings are calculated by a points-based system based on the votes of 12 staff members. Point values are assigned to each ranking. The point values are assigned as follows: 16 points for a No. 1 ranking, down to one point for a No. 16 ranking.

The staff members are getting closer to a consensus for which teams belong in the Super 16 on a weekly basis. Three of the 14 teams that didn't crack the Super 16 received points. Six teams that didn't get into the Super 16 last week received points, down from eight two weeks ago.
The Edmonton Oilers plummeted the furthest this week, going from No. 6 to No. 16 after four consecutive regulation losses. Three teams that weren't ranked last week moved into the Super 16 this week.
Here's where they all landed once the math was finished:

1. New York Rangers (13-4-0)

Total points:179
Last week: No. 3
Hit: They keep scoring. The Rangers have scored at least three goals in nine consecutive games. It's no surprise that they're 8-1-0 in those games. They have scored five or more goals in nine of their 17 games.
Miss: Chris Kreider (upper body) and Pavel Buchnevich (back spasms) have missed the past two games. Each was out earlier in the season with a similar injury.

2. Pittsburgh Penguins (10-4-2)

Total points: 175
Last week: No. 1
Hit:The Penguins haven't been deterred by giving up the first goal or getting outshot, for the most part. They are 5-2-0 in games when they allowed the first goal and 5-2-1 when getting outshot.
Miss: They are 2-for-23 (8.7 percent) on the power play in seven road games.

3. Montreal Canadiens (13-2-2)

Total points:169
Last week:No. 2
Hit:The Canadiens are 12-0-1 when they score the first goal.
Miss: Tomas Plekanec has two points in his past 13 games.

4. Chicago Blackhawks (11-4-2)

Total points: 167
Last week: No. 4
Hit:Patrick Kane has had as many as six shots on goal in four games this season, including in two of the past four. His 57 shots are 11th in the League. He was fifth last season (287).
Miss:The Blackhawks have gotten one goal from defensemen Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook through 17 games. They combined for 23 goals last season and 18 in 2014-15.

5. Washington Capitals (10-4-2)

Total points:141
Last week:No. 5
Hit:The Capitals have scored first in 13 of 16 games. They were 9-2-2 in those games.
Miss:Goalies Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer have combined for a .900 save percentage after the first period (28 goals on 280 shots). In the first period, they have a .951 save percentage (eight goals on 164 shots).

6. Tampa Bay Lightning (10-6-1)

Total points:128
Last week: No. 7
Hit:Nikita Kucherov has five points in the past two games, and his 21 points are tied for the League lead with Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets.
Miss: Captain Steven Stamkos is out indefinitely after tearing the meniscus in his right knee during a 4-3 win at the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. Forward Jonathan Drouin has missed the past seven games with an upper-body injury, and defenseman Anton Stralman has missed two in a row with an upper-body injury.

7. San Jose Sharks (9-7-0)

Total points:95
Last week: No. 9
Hit: The Sharks have allowed six goals on 124 shots in the first period (.952 save percentage).
Miss: They've allowed 16 goals on 146 shots in the second period (.890 save percentage).

8. New Jersey Devils (9-3-3)

Total points:88
Last week:No. 11
Hit:Cory Schneider and Keith Kinkaid have allowed seven goals on 140 shots (.950 save percentage) during a five-game winning streak.
Miss: Forward Taylor Hall will miss 3-4 weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Wednesday.

9. St. Louis Blues (8-6-3)

Total points:82
Last week:No. 8
Hit:Vladimir Tarasenko has at least a point in six consecutive games (2-7-9), the second-longest streak in the League behind Stars forward Antoine Roussel's seven-game streak (3-6-9).
Miss:The Blues have lost four consecutive road games in regulation by a combined 22-7.

10. Anaheim Ducks (8-6-3)

Total points:70
Last week:No. 10
Hit:John Gibson had a much-needed strong performance Tuesday, when he made 33 saves in 4-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers. He had allowed seven goals on 36 shots in his previous two starts.
Miss:The Ducks are 0-5-3 when the opponent scores the first goal. They're also 0-3 in overtime, when they have allowed the winning goal an average of 73 seconds into the extra session.

11. Ottawa Senators (10-5-1)

Total points:61
Last week:No. 15
Hit: The Senators are 3-0 in the shootout. Their shooters are 5-for-11, and their goalies are 10-for-12.
Miss: They are 0-for-14 on the power play in their past five games and 1-for-26 in the past nine.

12. Boston Bruins (10-6-0)

Total points:60
Last week:NR
Hit: Tuukka Rask has allowed three goals on 101 shots in winning his past four starts since he allowed five goals on 24 shots in a 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Nov. 5.
Miss: Forward Patrice Bergeron has no points in five straight games and no points in 10 of the 13 games he has played this season.

13. Minnesota Wild (8-6-1)

Total points:55

Hit: The Wild are fifth in the League in home penalty-kill percentage (90.5 percent; 19-for-21).
Miss: They are 30th in road power-play percentage (7.1 percent; 2-for-28).

14. Winnipeg Jets (9-7-2)

Total points: 49

Hit: The Jets lead the NHL with 25 goals in the third period.
Miss:They've needed all of those goals because Winnipeg has allowed the most goals of any team in the second period (24).

15. Columbus Blue Jackets (8-4-2)

Total points:37
Last week:NR
Hit:Zach Werenski's 13 points (five goals, eight assists) lead rookie defensemen and are tied for third overall among rookies. He is second in ice time per game among rookies (21:50).
Miss:Seth Jones has missed four consecutive games with a foot injury and is expected to miss at least another six.

16. Edmonton Oilers (9-7-1)

Total points:36
Last week:No. 6
Hit: Despite losing four in a row, the Oilers have outshot the opposition in each of their past three games by a combined 115-84.
Miss:They've lost four in a row in regulation and have allowed the first goal in all four games. Edmonton has allowed the first goal in 11 of its 17 games and is 4-6-1 in those games.
