Bo Horvat was named captain of the New York Islanders on Monday.
This will be the 31-year-old’s second time being a captain in the NHL.
Selected by the Vancouver Canucks with the No. 9 pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, Horvat was named their captain prior to the 2019-20 season. He held that position until he was traded to the Islanders on Jan. 30, 2023 for forwards Anthony Beauvillier and Aatu Raty, and a conditional first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.
Horvat has 618 points (300 goals, 318 assists) in 881 regular-season games, including 198 points (99 goals, 99 assists) in 260 games for New York. He is entering the fourth season of an eight-year contract he signed with the Islanders on Feb. 5, 2023, six days after he was acquired in the trade.
He replaces Anders Lee, who signed a three-year, $16.2 million contract with the Utah Mammoth on July 1. Lee had been New York's captain the previous eight seasons.
The Islanders, who open training camp this week, will begin their regular season at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sept. 30.
Nine NHL teams are without a captain: the Anaheim Ducks, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks and Canucks.
